    PREFACE

All of us live in a technology rich environment. We depend on it in some way for every aspect of our life such as, education, communication, entertainment, designing, medicine, etc. The list is endless. Computer Science is no longer limited to just definitions and commands rather, it has now become the central focus of our lives. It now helps us to understand and appreciate the applications and the vast uses of computer science in our lives.

This series has been written and designed with an idea to help the next generation students to hone their already curious minds. Since technology is inter related to everyday activities, our books contain examples from everyday life for the students to relate and map the concepts easily with other subjects as well. The idea is to provide students with a medium to nurture and develop their skills rather than simply learn about computers and technology.

Touchpad Prime (Version 2.1) is based on Windows 10 and MS Office 2016. The books have been designed in such a way that teachers can use them as tools to integrate computer science with other subjects and skills. We hope that the book will help the children to learn the concepts and find their applications for progressive development of computer-aided education. We look forward to any suggestions to improve the book. Here’s wishing young readers lots of tech fun and a knowledge-filled journey ahead!

We use the mouse to point at things on the monitor. But, how does the computer understand what we are doing?

The computer understands our commands through software and hardware. Let's learn about them.

As we know that computer system is made up of two types of components: hardware and software. Both the components are equally important for functioning of a computer system. Without software component, the hardware component is useless and vice-versa.

    Hardware

All the physical components of a computer system are called hardware. These are the parts which we can see or touch. Hardware components are classified into two types: internal and external. Let us learn about these in detail.

    c

    Internal Hardware Components

All the hardware components that are located inside the CPU Box (System Cabinet) are called internal hardware components. Examples of the internal hardware components are CPU, Motherboard, Power Supply, Disk Drives, Modem, Ports, etc. Let us learn about some of them in detail.

    CPU

CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a processor, sometimes called a microprocessor. It is the brain of the computer that does all the calculations and runs all the programs. It manages all the operations and carries out the basic instructions which operate a computer.

The three main components of CPU are:

ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit): Performs mathematical and logical operations.

CU (Control Unit): Directs all the operations of a processor.

Memory Unit: Stores data and instructions.

    Motherboard

    Motherboard

The motherboard is sometimes called the system board or main circuit board. Many electronic components are attached to the motherboard or are built into it.

The motherboard contains the connectors or slots for attaching additional boards, CPU, and memory.

    Disk Drive

A disk drive is an internal hardware component of the computer system that is used to read and write on storage disks. Disk drives can either be located internally within a CPU box or located in a separate box that is external to the CPU box. Most of the disk drives work in a similar fashion.
