About this ebook

The cabinets were bare.

And he wasn't Mother Hubbard.

The news media made it sound worse than it was.

Eating a man's face off was bad, but now roving bands of drug addicts were attacking people in droves.

Nobody knew why. Nobody could explain what was really happening.

Then the order came from on high.

Shelter in place and let the authorities handle it.

Except they were out of food. And he wasn't going to let his family go hungry.

It was supposed to be a quick trip, a supply run just to grab some essentials.

But when a mild mannered dad is dropped into the chaos of a world gone mad, he will do anything to survive and get back to his family.

They're holed up at home with no one to protect them. No food. Limited water. And when the power cuts off, a mom has to decide if the danger is for real or all in her mind.

    CHAPTER ONE

The talking heads were at it again.

Did you see this? Brian called out from the living room.

    Shannon, come see this.

His wife padded into their living room on bare feet. She was twenty seven, a few years younger than he was, and looked tired after a day home watching their young daughter.

She tucked her legs underneath her as she settled on the sofa next to him.

    What?

He pointed the remote at the television and turned the volume up.

We now go live to Trisha Troutwood who is covering this breaking story. Trish?

"Bob, we’re live on the scene of an officer involved shooting where authorities tell us, a police officer shot a man after he attacked a passerby and began eating her face.

Trish started her report and gets attacked by one of the undead.

    :

Brian and Shannon were watching the attack on television.

    Brian

This is going to get worse.

    Shannon

    It’s not real. It’s like a movie.

Brian stared at the talking head on the television.

He licked his lips and spoke out of the sound of his mouth.

I want you to go get Tristan. Get into the bonus room. We’re going to lock down until they get this under control.

    Who? Shannon asked.

He shrugged, but didn’t rip his eyes off the screen.

Somebody. The government. The Army. Somebody.

She stared at him for a moment, wondering what he had in mind.

Under normal circumstances, she might be able to read his mind.

Not really read it, she wasn’t psychic. They had just been together for so long that she could see the set to his chin, or the crinkle of the skin around his eyes and make a pretty darn good guess as to what he was thinking.

Being with one person for so long also meant she knew how he would react to something.

He knew the same things about her.

How she squeezed her toothpaste from the top, which he hated, or how she took her coffee, which he made for her every morning.

He knew her moods which got worse four days out of every month, and he kept a watchful eye on the birth control pill count just so he could plan longer runs and more time with their kid at the park on those four days.

She appreciated him for it, appreciated that he knew her, that they were beyond guessing.

    Except now.

She wasn’t sure what he wanted with her, what he meant by lock down.

She didn’t know what he wanted to do.

Still, she trusted him though and hurried up the stairs to get their young daughter.

She heard him rush into their kitchen and was glad he stopped watching the television.

She was afraid all of the madness outside was starting to affect him.

    CHAPTER TWO

He ripped open the pantry and felt like Mother Hubbard from the child’s nursery rhyme.

    The shelves were almost bare.

Shannon rushed behind him, gathering things from their child’s bedroom and hustling them up the stairs.

    Brian grabbed the cabinet
