Introduction

It is over twenty-six years since I first took to the construction business. Growing up, I was an inquisitive child with an innate passion for building little edifices of my own, blithely unaware of the fortunate fact that many years down the lane, I would be facilitating people in purchasing their dream house.

Hello, my name is Dan Morgan – a licensed and certified home inspector, Journeyman carpenter, and vocational educator with the state of Illinois, USA, and a proud owner of Danny Inspections, as well as a Certified 203K consultant. Frankly, these are the titles I had never anticipated I would be referred to as, but nature has its way of mapping your life choices. With the trajectory of my career unknown, I was satisfied working at the American Fair Credit Association when a sudden shift in circumstances led us to realize a dream of our own. I wouldn’t lie; the path to creating a meaningful life in the construction business was indeed daunting, but it was worthwhile as I realized it many years later. This is my story of discovering my true passion, of unbridled dedication to my dream of building and rehabilitating homes, and of recounting to people that dreams do become realities when we work toward achieving them with an optimistic mindset, hard work, and of course, a little risk-taking.

In 1997, my life took an astronomical turn when my family took a major risk of investing in two derelict properties with little to no buying demand, thus putting ourselves precariously between booming economic and financial catastrophe. Here is a hint: It all started with a phone call.

In the summer of ’97, while I was intently engaged in some crucial paper work at the American Fair Credit Association, I received an unexpected call from one of my tenants informing me that I had a plumbing problem at one of my properties. Naturally, my first response to the situation at hand was to call a service provider to ascertain what the problem was and then find a probable solution. To my dismay, the service provider informed me the radiators were not working and that I would need a new boiler, with repair costs amounting to at least $8000.00. Of course, it was quite a lot, considering only one thing needed replacement. 

Distressed and lost in thoughts, I caught a glimpse of Willie Alexander – an impeccable handyman, repairing the lighting system inside our office and talking to one of my co-workers about the possible fix; he sounded incredibly sure of himself (and rightly so). After overhearing their conversation for a few minutes, I approached Willie and communicated him the boiler story.
