A mysterious individual with a white face boards the train to London. At first he does not seem to be interested in what is happening in his carriage, but suddenly, attracted by a book a passenger is reading, he starts telling about a strange series of dreams that had and have changed his life forever.
Who was H. G. Wells
H. G. Wells (Herbert George Wells) was a British writer and one of the most influential science fiction authors in history. He was born on September 21, 1866, in Bromley, Kent, England, and died on August 13, 1946, in London.
Wells is often referred to as the father of science fiction
for his pioneering works that laid the foundation for the genre. He had a profound impact on both science fiction and speculative fiction, and many of his ideas and concepts have become iconic and have inspired countless other writers and filmmakers.
Some of his most famous works include: The Time Machine (1895), in which Wells introduced the concept of time travel, with the protagonist traveling forward in time to a distant future; The War of the Worlds (1898), which tells the story of an alien invasion of Earth by Martians, and has become one of the most adapted and referenced science fiction stories in popular culture; The Invisible Man (1897), which revolves around a scientist who discovers a way to become invisible but is eventually driven to madness by his newfound power; The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) which explores themes of ethics and morality as it follows a shipwrecked man who encounters a mad scientist creating hybrid animal-human creatures on a remote island.
Wells's works often delved into scientific and philosophical themes, and he used science fiction as a medium to explore social, political, and ethical issues of his time. He also wrote non-fiction works, including The Outline of History, which provided a broad overview of human history.
H. G. Wells's influence on science fiction and literature, in general, cannot be overstated. He expanded the imagination of readers and popularized the idea of using speculative fiction to explore the possibilities and consequences of scientific and technological advancements. His impact can still be felt in contemporary science fiction and continues to inspire writers and thinkers today.
A Dream of Armageddon
The man with the white face entered the carriage at Rugby. He moved slowly in spite of the urgency of his porter, and even while he was still on the platform I noted how ill he seemed. He dropped into the corner over against me with a sigh, made an incomplete attempt to arrange his travelling shawl, and became motionless, with his eyes staring vacantly. Presently he was moved by a sense of my observation, looked up at me, and put out a
