    Materials and Tools

Only a few tools are needed to carve the projects in this booklet, and you probably already have them on hand! You’ll need a rough out knife, a detail knife, your choice of wood, a pull saw or band saw for cutting out the blanks, and a drill with assorted bits.

    Other Useful Items

Cyanoacrylate (CA) glue: For attaching arms, legs, beaks, spikes, noses, or fins to the main carvings.

Gouge (optional): For making curved, scooping cuts.

Paintbrushes: For applying paint to the completed carvings. I most often use a larger flat brush for base coats and a liner brush for details.

Pencil or marker: For marking measurements or tracing patterns as needed.

Wooden dowel: For carving and attaching smaller details such as arms, legs, beaks, noses, and fins. Often, you can achieve these details by carving a small dowel or piece of scrap wood to shape.
