About this ebook

Verity is comfortable with her current job and had not requested the transfer to Shang Qi, a place that is well known for it's advanced technology, beautiful mountains, and sprawling Werewolf population. Acting as secretary to a neurotic, unhappily married woman does not appeal to her, no matter how her foreign-office chiefs assure her that it is worth the trouble. Unfortunately, she has little say in the matter.
The job turns out to be even more troublesome than she had feared and the biggest problem isn't Mrs. Addams, but the woman's attractive husband, an Alpha Werewolf whom she can't help but feel drawn to. It makes no sense to her that his own wife appears insistent on thwarting his plans and antagonizing him every moment they're together. To make matters worse, Mrs. Addams appears to be having an affair with another man, a Panther Shifter who makes his interest in Verity all too clear.
There's more than meet the eye to all the tangled relationships at her new office and Verity finds herself in the middle of all of them.

Woodcombe, but the woman's attractive husband, an Alpha Werewolf whom she can't help but feel drawn to. It makes no sense to her that his own wife appears insistent on thwarting his plans and antagonizing him every moment they're together. To make matters worse, Mrs. Woodcombe appears to be having an affair with another man, a Panther Shifter who makes his interest in Verity all too clear.

There's more than meet the eye to all the tangled relationships at her new office and Verity finds herself in the middle of all of them.

    Chapter One

The phone call that summons Verity Swiftlet to Alpha William's office gives her no warning of the havoc it's about to bring to her life. Later,  she would wonder what would have happened if she had ignored the summon. But it is not as though she has the power to reject tasks given out to her, even unpleasant ones. She is a Werecat, small enough to be considered prey, and therefore is not afforded as much rights as the rest of the population. Still, there are newer laws now, and Alpha William, while being an Alpha Werewolf, is not her Alpha. She has not pledge her allegiance to a single Alpha and she doesn't have to do that until she is twenty-five. She has five more years to decide.

But that mid-March afternoon, she's innocently unware of the disruption it would bring to her life and therefore, does not even consider saying no. She makes sure her laptop is locked so that her coworkers doesn't get any 'fun' ideas about pranking the only cat shifter in the office and sets off down the corridor.

Even after six months of working in the office, her colleagues still stare at her as she makes her way down their offices, looking up from glass windows to watch the way her tail sways behind her as she moves. She has gotten very good at making sure her ears do not fold back and she keeps her gaze straight forward. She isn't afraid of any of them. Through the narrow windows that range along one side, she glimpses patches of grey sky, rain-washed and cloudy, and she thinks longingly of the days when she had lived in the country with her family. Now, the city is her home and a visit to the countryside is regarded as an outing. It is not as though there is any reason for her to return.

    Not anymore.

She pushes aside all personal thoughts as she scans her palm print on the automatic door that slides open upon recognizing her.

Alpha William is one of the more important members of the Foreign Office, though no one know what exactly it is that his role here is. She supposes it's the same with most of the high-ranking officials in the office. Once their positions gets past a certain level, their job scope stops being questioned.

My dear, he says warmly, standing to greet her. Thank you for coming on such short notice.

Of course, sir. She does not make it a habit to step on the tails of the people ranked higher than her in the office and she doesn't intend to start now. She clasps her hands in front of her and waits to learn why he wants to see her.

I have a favor to ask you, my dear, he says.

She has a sneaking suspicion that he had forgotten her name and it's why he keeps referring to her as 'my dear', but she doesn't let it get to her. As long as it's within my abilities, sir, she says politely.

He nods. Yes, I don't believe how it wouldn't be. You are a very competent- Here, he pauses and looks at the file in front of him. Secretary, he finishes lamely, obviously having forgotten her position at the company along with her name.

She wishes he would hurry along and tell her what he wants her to do. He unfolds his hands and fidgets with a pen. Hesitancy is not an attitude she associates with the Alpha and she wonders what had caused it. She shifts on her feet, her tail swaying impatiently behind her despite her effort to be composed. He would tell her in his own good time. In any case, it's not like she has any urgent work to get back to. They have her doing some transcription work, which has been rather frustrating because Madame Kimberly has a thick foreign accent that most people would struggle to understand. It is why the task had been handed to her, she supposes. Nobody else wanted to do it.

What do you know of our trade position with Shang Qi? he asks abruptly.

Virtually nothing at all, she thinks, but wracks her brain for any bit of gossip she might have picked up while working in the office. Nothing much, she admits at length. I did a piece on them about trading gas, but the discussion on that fell through, she says, frowning because she isn't sure if she had gotten it right, but Alpha William is the sort to point out mistakes directly, so when he nods, she supposes she has nothing to worry about.

Our relationship with Shang Qi is tumulus at best, he says. They do not find anything advantageous about trading with us, seeing as we have nothing that they don't have in abundance, and they are strong enough that we try not to do anything to rock the boat.

She frowns, not knowing where he's going with this.

We are in the middle of some delicate negotiations with them.

She does not like where he's going with this. She doesn't see why she has anything to do with trade discussions, but she knows how rare her sort are and how some people look at shifters like her like she's something to be ogled at. Are you one of the negotiators? she asks cautiously.

Goodness no, he chuckles. I am nowhere near powerful or influential enough for that.

She doesn't see him as being completely powerless. He's an Alpha, after all, and that title alone grants him some strength. I'm sure that's not true, Alpha William, she says.

He smiles at her. You are very kind, my dear. But to the matter at hand, we have an excellent Alpha who is already in the midst of the negotiation- you may have heard of him, Nathan Woodcombe? At her nod, he continues. Excellent, exceptionally Alpha. Shrewd mind with remarkable decision-making skills. The comment is followed by a sigh, as if Alpha William had thought of something which does not fit with what he had just said. He married Mary Destiny a little while ago. I'm sure you've heard of the family?

I have heard a few things regarding the matter here and there, Verity replies. Destiny is a famous political family, only fading into the background in the last decades as new families came to power.

If Mary's family were alive, we would be seeing a lot more of them, he comments. Unfortunately she is not as well versed in playing politics as the rest of her family is. She still has plenty of money and influence, however.

You were telling me about Alpha Nathan? she prompts, faintly bored by the Destiny family. She sees her name mentioned in tabloids every once in a while and has always found Mary Destiny to be a little bit of an insufferably spoiled woman, even before her tragedy. Perhaps she should have a little sympathy for the woman, but she has yet to see if the woman has any redeeming qualities to compensate for her personality.

Ah well, he clears his throat, uncomfortable with what he's about to say. Well, they've been in Shang Qi for a year and she wants to come back. That's causing a problem. Our Prima Alpha wants Nathan to remain where he is, seeing as he is the best man to deal with the foreign Werewolves and it would be disastrous to bring someone else at this stage.

I'm sure with the right guidance, someone can take over his role, she says diplomatically.

Our Prima Alpha doesn't think so and the other Alphas are inclined to agree. The Qi Werewolves are not keen on working with someone else.

Well, she licks her lips. Then Mary can just come back on her own and the two of them can be long distance? I'm sure she will be able to visit and vice versa, she suggests.

He refuses to let her return without him. If she comes back, so will he, Alpha William hitches forward in his chair. When Nathan was asked to  go to Shang Qi, he didn't want to accept - said Mary didn't like the idea. It isn't until our Prima Alpha asked him personally to go that he agreed.

Then he surely wouldn't leave in the middle of the negotiations?

That's exactly what he's threatening to do.

To have the power to just refuse to take an order from a Prima Alpha. Verity wouldn't know anything about that. She has read about Nathan Woodcombe, though. He was, at one point, a candidate for Prima Alpha, the leader of all the Alphas in the territory, the most powerful man in the city of Zentroin, but he ceded to his brother, who is now the Prima Alpha. He must love his wife very much, Verity hums.

He's putting her first, Alpha William says in a tone that suggests he does not approve, but it is not in his place to insult the brother of their Prima Alpha.

Surely there are other Alphas who can take his place? A few, perhaps, to replace his single position.

None as good at Nathan, he sighs. His family has connections with Qi for more than a century and he speaks the language fluently. More importantly, the other Alphas respect and like him. It's important that he stays and finishes the job. It's not just an interchange of trade, it would mean a strengthening of our two countries and ensure that we don't need to continue worrying about our shared borders.

Verity wonders what kind of man Nathan Woodcombe could be to put his wife's childish demands before the completion of a task he had undertaken to do. Surely, there's a limit to how much a man can love a woman? Why doesn't Mrs. Woodcombe like Qi? she asks. It is a lovely place. She has been there a few times before, mostly because her hometown borders one of their villages.

She says it's too restricting and she complains of the boredom. It is also difficult for her to fit in, considering she does not speak the language. If she had a good translator, I'm sure she could be persuaded to stay on for another few more months. Nathan's work should be finished by then.

Verity relaxes. At least now she knows what the Alpha's looking for. So you need a companion for her? I'm sure I can ask one of my friends from home if they're willing to play the role of a translator and companion for Mrs. Woodcombe, she says. There are multiple, she suspects. As much as they all love their hometown, it's a little bit of a dull place with very little to do. Most girls her age are trying to leave and make their marks elsewhere. She's lucky. Her ears and tail, which have always been seen as an anomaly among her peers, also make her stand out now that she's in the city and she was hired relatively quickly because of it. The local government wanted to look like they are inclusive and do not discriminate. What better way to prove that than to hire a Cat Shifter who looks more cat than human?

I've already got a candidate in mind, Alpha William replies.

Oh? she perks up, curious if she knows the person he is thinking of.

    You.

She blinks at him for several seconds before smiling weakly, You're pulling my tail. Said tail whips from side to side in an act that portrays her annoyance more than words can, but she doesn't bother trying to hide that she does not like this idea one bit.

This is not a joking matter, my dear. I need someone intelligent and sensible, someone I can trust. You are ideal for the job. And I imagine a change in scenery would do good for you too, my dear.

Her hackles rise. She keeps her private matters private and does not appreciate him bringing it up so casually, especially since it doesn't even seem like he remembers her name. I am a press-officer, she protests. I translate and transcribe articles. I wouldn't know the first thing to do with being a companion.

You've already gotten the first part of that job covered, he says.

I'm sure there are plenty of other more suitable candidates, she promises hastily. I can get in touch with-

I'm not asking you to take the job, Alpha William interrupts quietly. I am ordering you.

The rest of her protest disappears with the remark. She inhales suddenly in surprise at the surge of white-hot burning that slashes into her gut that she has to take a step back. Something about the way he says this reaches inside of her without even making any physical contact and she feels, for the first time, the pull and power of an Alpha, of a born leader with the innate ability to control those around him. His words fill her lungs and her heart and makes her want to go on her knees. She keeps on her feet, though it is a difficult task, and does not yield. He is not her Alpha, but for him to pull rank like that, not just as her superior, but as an Alpha, must mean the situation is far more important than he is prepared to admit. It was not in your place to do that, she says quietly, curling her shaky fingers into fists until her claws are digging into the soft flesh of her palms.

He nods slowly, looking a little bit chastised. I apologize, he clears his throat, clearly uncomfortable.

You have not told me the whole story, have you, Alpha William? she asks bluntly, not seeing the point of being polite as he had not extended the same curtesy to her. And it would appear that he needs
