Chapter 1
Ghosts were thought of as lifeless and terrifying, with white faces and quaking voices. They would breeze across spaces floating over the floors, countering the laws of gravity like it was nothing at all. This was the one image that had been impressed on the minds of every child; so, everyone was certain that they would be able to identify a ghost if they saw one. As for James, he had been able to identify the ghostly spirit that had enveloped itself around his city. The bubbles of joy and euphoria had long floated to other realms, and all that was left was a vacuum of gloom. There were also horrific sounds of bells signaling the impending doom, and every single time he heard it, his blood would thrum hard within his veins, releasing an almost electrical heat.
The brightly colored buildings had been painted over in the darkest hues of red and black, and the vultures hovered in the sky at night, with big red eyes and horrifying screeches. Sleeping at night with such sounds drumming into his ears had been hard; it set his skin aglow with goosebumps and cold sweat. Maria, his wife, would cling hard to him, with the hope that he’d offer some support, but then, it didn’t help that he was also a bundle of nerves himself. For a time he would awaken every night with blood-curdling dreams. To put an end to all of that, he’d tried playing a couple of games with Alexander. They’d usually have very deep conversations, some humorous, and the others were of the tragedy that had befallen their city.
The city had become eerily silent at night. The silence made him remember his time in the RI when he’d been punished by the wardens. He’d always thought silence was good for meditation until it became so loud that it deafened him. The wardens would lock him up in the darkest cells, with only the sound of clanging handcuffs to keep him company. The silence had messed with his mind, there had been a thousand times when he would intentionally scream into the thickness of the air, to convince himself that he wasn’t deaf. He would cry and then laugh, like a mad man in his cage.
Even after he escaped, his mind never seemed to be free from the chains.
The Reformatory Institution had taken many normal and sane men like him, chained them, and pushed them into believing that they were insane. Instead of reforming them for the better, it took them and molded them into that which was far from normal. They became beasts, fighting at every single chance, with their nails growing into animal-like claws. A thousand horrific things happened, and even though he tried to remember it all, his brain somehow managed to block most of it in his mind — like a self-defense mechanism.
Everything had been stolen, from him, and from every other person he cared about. He had
