    Chapter 1

    What Herbal Antibiotics Are

Herbal antibiotics have been around long before the discovery of Penicillin, which marked the beginning of modern antibiotics. Despite the significance of this event and all the other discoveries scientists made regarding synthetic antibiotics since these compounds can often do more harm than good. Because of this, more and more people are re-discovering the benefits of natural antibiotics. This chapter discusses herbal antibiotics, including their uses throughout the history of mankind. You’ll learn about their benefits and why many find comfort in using natural solutions for bacterial infections. You’ll also read about what makes herbal antibiotics different from their regular, synthetic counterparts.

    Brief History of Herbal Antibiotics

Since the beginning of time, people have been relying on herbs for treating and protecting against various diseases. Even with their limited scientific knowledge, in ancient times, people understood that diseases come from nature. This prompted them to find natural solutions for many conditions, and bacterial infections were no different. By interacting with a wide variety of herbs, our ancestors discovered that many herbs are effective in fighting off infections and curing diseases. Herbal antibiotics were the best tools folk healers from different cultures had over many centuries. They are natural compounds that are made from plants or herbs. They have antimicrobial properties which enable the body to fight off diseases caused by bacterial infections. Some of the most common diseases they’ve been known to treat over the course of history include the common cold, diarrhea, infections caused by injuries, tuberculosis, and syphilis.

While it’s unclear when our ancestors began using herbs as antibiotics, archaeological evidence suggests that early civilizations incorporated plants with antimicrobial properties into different rituals. For example, medical texts from ancient Egypt show that the Egyptians used various plant parts for warding off infections. Among the 700 medical formulas found in these texts were what was also known as probiotics. This suggests that they were aware of the need to restore the balance after medical treatment. However, it’s not likely they understood the concept of microorganisms and specific methods of how natural medicine killed the harmful ones. Similar evidence was found in Iraq, where herbs like yarrow were found around human bones dating back to the Stone Age. The herbs were presumably used to treat an injury, including preventing a bacterial infection.

The ancient Greek and Roman civilization were widely developed and left behind plenty of historical evidence regarding the use of herbal medicine. However, they tied the use of herbs to religion and believed that ailments were the result of the wrath of gods. In ancient Greece, it was a common belief that if someone disrespected the gods, they punished the person with a disease. The Greek physician Hippocrates was the first person who developed a theory that differed from this superstition. Now known as the founding father of Western medicine, Hippocrates was ridiculed and even imprisoned for going against traditional beliefs. He believed that every disease has natural causes, and the treatment for it should be natural too. He advocated for using herbs and plant-based food to treat fever and other signs of infection.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is another great example of the use of natural medicine. The Chinese have been using medicinal herbs for centuries. They also had the foresight to note everything down. Their written records have provided modern scientists with information on how to use medicinal herbs to treat certain diseases, including bacterial infections. At the same time, Herbalism was also growing in India. Ancient Indians believed that herbs are able to connect with specific energies in the body and provide balance.

In the Middle Ages, people were readily using herbal medicine, including antibiotics. They learned to cultivate their own herbs to have them accessible whenever needed. In the Tudor era, at a time when there was a huge divide between the upper and lower classes, many could only afford the care of folk healers. Having herbal medicine at hand often meant the difference between life and death when someone got sick or injured. Herbalism has become a popular and well-respected art, and soon, people all over Europe became aware of the medicinal properties of herbs. In the middle of the 17th century, an English botanist named Nicholas Culpeper published pharmacopeia, a manual for the application of medicinal and antibiotic herbs. As more and more people started using herbs to treat illnesses and injuries, there was a need for a systemized botanical nomenclature. In the 18th century, Carl Linne created the double nomenclature for plant classification using the Latin names of each herb. This made finding the right herbs for each ailment much easier for both herbalists and regular people.

Due to the industrial revolution that marked the 19th century, there was a significant shift in the use of herbal medicine during this period. Synthetic pharmaceuticals with antimicrobial effects were discovered and used for successfully treating syphilis after 1910. In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin. This was the first-ever antibiotic, and it became incredibly popular at the time. It was soon mass-produced, along with other antibiotics that have been subsequently discovered. The new drugs were advertised as the most effective treatment for infections, and herbalism was practically banned. However, after a few decades, in the 1950s, scientists started to raise concerns about the all-to-liberal Penicillin use. An increasing number of people reported side effects, and scientists soon discovered the reasons behind this. What once was natural has been stripped of every unnecessary element, and only certain components were incorporated into the artificial drugs. Unknowingly, pharmacologists discarded other plant parts which contained nutrients and agents that could protect the cells from the toxicity of the antibiotic component and the bacteria itself.

After that, herbalists started advocating for the use of whole plants to avoid the potential side effects of the active microbial component. Despite this, many people still trust regular antibiotics more and regard herbal antibiotics with serious doubt and disdain. Not only do many people still use synthetic antibiotics, but they also do it without just cause. Overwhelmed doctors were also guilty of prescribing antibiotics without ascertaining whether it was the right course of treatment. For example, when someone gets a cold, this is typically caused by a viral infection, which antibiotics cannot treat. Other conditions that antibiotics are ineffective against include:

    Common ear infections

    Stomach flu

    Common sinus infections

    Coughs and runny nose

    Flu

    Bronchitis

    Whooping cough

    Coronavirus

All these are caused by viruses and not bacteria. A sample should be taken from the patient to learn whether bacteria or viruses cause the condition. The sample should then be analyzed by cultivating the pathogens growing in it. Unfortunately, this is time-consuming, and to save everyone the
