The Wolf and Me - Jessica L Mueth

    I

    Chapter 1

My story begins in May, on this exact day, early in the morning. Today started like any other day. I woke up from my sleep and started my morning chores. I don’t know how to explain this, but I had a feeling that something extraordinary was going to happen. I went out to the hen house and started collecting eggs. Later that evening, I went for a walk along the beach.

As I walked toward the beach, I thought I saw a wolf. It didn’t come close, but it looked like it was curious about me. As I kept walking, it began to follow me; when I reached the beach, I sat down on the sand. Then the wolf did something I never thought it would do. As I was sitting on the beach, it came right up to me and sat beside me. For a moment, I felt that maybe this was somebody’s dog that looked a bit like a wolf.

So, I reached out my hand to pet it and maybe saw if there was a collar. As my hand got close to it, it suddenly looked up at me, and at that moment, I knew it wasn’t a dog; after it looked at me, it nodded its head like it was saying that it was OK to pet it. And with its permission, I reached out and touched its fur. The following day, I did my chores like every other day, but I went for a walk down toward the beach when evening came. When I got to the forest entrance, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the same wolf from last night sitting there like it was waiting for me to come.

I didn’t know how it knew that I was going for a walk or how I would end up in the very same woods where it was waiting. I thought about it for a while and couldn’t figure out what it was thinking and what it wanted from me, so we headed toward the beach and sat in the sand together. Then one morning, I headed toward the woods, and when I went into the forest, I must have tripped over something that made me hit my head. When I woke up, I found the wolf lying next to me. When I tried to get up, I felt a sharp pain in my leg and guessed that I might have sprained it when I fell.

When I noticed that I was in pain, I got a little worried. But what surprised me the most was that it started to lick my wound like it would do if I were one of her pups. That’s when I realized that the wolf, I was spending so much time with was a female wolf. Amazingly she hardly left my side, and the only time she left was to find some food and get a drink of water. When she came back, she was pulling a branch, and she brought it close to me, and I saw not only food but also some water. As it became night, I noticed it began to grow colder.

I started to lie down to get some sleep, and she would lie right next to me to help keep me warm throughout the night. I thought that I would be too scared to sleep, but surprisingly, I wasn’t that scared at all, so I fell asleep. When I woke up the following day, I noticed that she was still by my side. I was amazed that she had stayed with me the whole night and even waited for me to wake up before moving around. She turned around toward me and sat down and started licking my face.

    Chapter 2

A few minutes later, she got up and took off, and I didn’t try to stop her because I had a feeling that she would come back. And my feeling turned out to be right; one hour later, she was back with food, water, and her pups. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, let alone holding and playing with the wolf pups was a great experience. I got to do and see something that very few people ever get to see none less experience. What I saw was a very kind, loving, and caring mother. I was extremely fortunate to be able to see this.

As I sat there, one of her pups came toward me, and it crawled into my lap and fell right to sleep. I looked over to her to see if this might bother her, but it seemed she was acceptable, to my surprise. I was amazed that she had so much trust in me to let me be near one of her pups. As I was playing with her pups, I was thrilled, so happy in fact that I forgot all about the pain in my leg. But this happy time came to a stop because suddenly, she sat straight up.

I knew at that moment that she had heard something. She started to growl, and as I turned my head to see what she was barking at, I soon found out that a strange male wolf had appeared behind us. When the male wolf came closer, she gave him an excellent warning to leave. But he didn’t listen, and he started to approach us again. That was the last straw; suddenly, she attacked him and gave him a severe injury.

After she made sure that he had run off, she came back to see if everyone was alright, and to my surprise, that included myself. The day turned to night, and as I lay down, I noticed not only did I have the wolf, but I also had the pups to sleep with this time. Morning came, and I woke up to see if I could now walk on my leg. Amazingly, I could stand with hardly any pain, so I started to walk around to get used to the pressure on my leg. As I was looking around for my wolf friends, I noticed she gave me a sign that looked like she wanted me to follow her.

I started to walk toward her, and I soon realized that she was leading me in the direction of my house. When we reached the edge of the forest, I saw my house, so I turned around to thank her and say goodnight. When I got to the front of the house, my dad opened the door, ran to me, and gave me a big hug. My dad helped me into the house, and my mom called the doctor so he could look at my
