The Ghostly Tales of Lake Tahoe - Kate Byrne
The Mythical Beasts of Tahoe
You’ve probably heard of the Loch Ness monster—a prehistoric beast who, according to legend, lives at the bottom of Scotland’s Loch Ness. (Loch
is the Scottish, Gaelic, and Irish word for lake.
) Through the years, there have been many sightings of Nessie,
as many affectionately call the beast. But what does Nessie look like? And is she real . . . or just a myth?
Those who claim to have seen Nessie describe a long body that dives and flits beneath the lake. Its long fins slice the water. Its small head surfaces every so often to reveal a dragon-like neck covered in smooth, reptilian skin. Through the years, people have taken photographs of something coming out of the water. They claim it’s the monster of Loch Ness. At the very least, it certainly looks like it could be an ancient creature.

In fact, Lake Tahoe is so deep (deeper than the Empire State building is tall!) that practically anything could be hiding down there undiscovered. Even . . . a mythical water beast.
Which brings us to Tahoe Tessie: the beastlike creature rumored to be hiding below the shimmering surface of Lake Tahoe. Going back more than one hundred years, the local Washoe and Paiute peoples have told the story of an underground tunnel beneath Cave Rock on the Nevada side of the lake. This is the place where many believe Tahoe Tessie lives. On those rare occasions when people claim to see her, they describe Tessie as a sea serpent. But . . . how would a sea serpent have ended up in a LAKE? Maybe the creature got lost somehow? Or maybe it’s been there all along, hiding out since ancient times. The lake is two million years old, after
