Preface
This book is intended to make the reader question if it is possible to live in a world after an apocalypse, not the world that will be but the world that might be. This book is told from the perspective of a very lost man in a very dystopian city of violence, revolution, and madness. The characters in this story are trying to live somewhat of a normal life despite living a very broken world. They pray that one day they will be saved from the bondages of oppression from a tyrannical leader who abuses her power. The evil government nicknamed the State has been committing crimes against its citizens, with manhunts, vehicles being searched, houses being searched without warrants, and finally, leaders who got away with their crimes with impunity. Even if the people may succeed in defeating this dictatorship, and even if one nightmare may have ended, another may have just begun!
City of Anarchy
Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Bartons
Smart City was filled with so much evil sometimes fresh corpses were found in the street from innocent victims who were tortured and killed by the State for unknown reasons. And to the top it all off, a new drug called Flakka was legalized by them also. This drug has a frozen effect in the brain, which can make any poor chump mentally ill for life. Nobody seems to care, except the Bartons.
Sarah Barton was trying to do some good in a corrupt system. She realized going inside too deep could mean death. She bragged that she was one of the best members of an underground organization called the resistance even though she worked with more experienced people like herself. Her husband, Patrick Barton, was a psychologist who worked in a psychiatric hospital called Life's Garden Hospital until he began trying to help me at Blackstone Penitentiary. Over time, Patrick's professional nature sort of cracked. He was warned by the warden, if he had one more outburst at work, he would be fired.
Every night, Patrick and Sarah went to bed, thinking of the hard times they had, living in this city. One night, Sarah heard a group of people knocking loudly at the door at midnight outside the house. She became enraged and began yelling at the group, who began to knock on the door even louder. It was the State, the ones responsible for turning Smart City into a living nightmare.
They explained to her that she must pay up her money to the State, saying, If you don't come back within a week or two, we will take up your property and sell it to another.
Sarah was nervous yet at the same time furious with them, so she simply said, Get the hell out of here.
Then they slapped her in the cheek. She tried to fight back, but then all of them pointed at her with their own guns.
One of them said to her with a stern voice, Go back!
All right, all right.
It's a good thing that all you little creatures can't afford even a single weapon.
Then they left while laughing about what just happened. While going back into her bedroom, Patrick woke up.
You were awake this whole time?
said Sarah.
I'm so sorry, honey. Things have just gotten crazy these days.
Sarah sighed, trying to not to react about any stress or anguish; so instead of getting upset, she said, I know, honey, but we can't do anything.
Her husband replied, I understand that, sweetheart, but how dare they make us live like slaves?
We won't live like slaves unless we see it that way,
explained Sarah.
Sarah, stop!
yelled Patrick.
Sarah became enraged. What? You think I don't want to have a normal life. You think I don't want to sometimes just die? I worked with the resistance to this disgusting phase until I realized it was just a way of life. I hate this life, Patrick, but there's… Sorry… I'm so sorry.
Patrick sighed and said, Okay. If they come back next week, Sarah, just take a deep breath because you're not alone in this.
Well, maybe you're right.
Sarah sighed. Hey, at least they weren't the neighbor's dogs.
In that moment, it was a rare time for Patrick and Sarah to embrace each other and even chuckle a bit; they hadn't been talking to each other since the governor of Smart City had resigned.
Believing you don't have a choice was one thing, but another when you really didn't have a choice.
Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Nabeel Toameh
The next day, Patrick was home when the phone rang.
Hello,
said Patrick.
Patrick, it's me.
Patrick was surprised and confused when the man spoke on the phone. He replied, Who is this?
It's your father's ghost.
What?
Patrick exclaimed.
Heh, I'm just playing with you. It's me, Toameh.
A sense of humor from you. That's new.
Look, I know it's a weekend, but some of my doctors aren't working well with the patients. Can you fill in?
Warden, I snapped at a patient the last time you asked me to come in. Why are you asking again?
queried Patrick.
Well, some of the other doctors are actually worse than you,
said Toameh.
You fired them, didn't you?
questioned Patrick.
What do you think, Doctor?
I think there's more information to what you are saying, sir.
Are you going to come in or what?
Maybe, but first, how are you doing?
Just fine. A patient just bit me in the hand a few hours ago,
replied Toameh sarcastically.
Oh, I hope you're okay. Look, I'm coming,
said Patrick.
Patrick drove off in his Lincoln Navigator. He was thinking about the director. He seemed like a nice guy, with sometimes a very quiet voice, and knew a lot of the Bartons, even their secrets and personal secrets.
While at the hospital, Toameh saw Patrick and yelled, Hurry! Hurry! A patient is in crisis.
The patient was a kid who seemed to be eight or seven years old and was running upstairs. Patrick and Toameh chased him. They were able to corner the kid. Toameh restrained him so Patrick could use the syringe with a loud of anesthesia inside. It slowly began to take effect, and then the kid was asleep.
Patrick said, Jesus Christ, boss, I thought all the patients guard with them.
They do,
said Toameh.
Then still why can some kid just wake up out of nowhere with nobody to watch him?
Patrick, I can explain.
Then tell me. I could have been at home right now.
Patrick. The hospital is compromised,
said Toameh.
What? Why?
Because of the State.
Toameh explained that Life's Garden Hospital was supposed to be a place for adults and children. In an interrogation room inside the statehouse, they accused Toameh that one of the children was not mentally ill but infected with Flakka. Toameh explained that it was outrageous and that his patients were all mentally ill, not medically sick, but they would not listen. They threatened him by saying, If you want both your patients and your hospital to keep going, give us the brat!
Toameh refused to go along with it; so the State decided that they would shut down his business as director of the hospital. The next thing he did was, he fired all his guards and doctors and explained to them the same way he was explaining to Patrick. It would be one of the hardest things he had ever done.
Patrick was surprised by Toameh's statement and said, So you told me to come here just to fire me, right?
I don't know.
Patrick always knew they had no police, no hope,
