First and foremost, I am incredibly thankful to two most beautiful women in the world my mother and my wife.
My children for their unwavering love, encouragement, and understanding throughout this writing journey. Their belief in me and constant support have been the driving force behind my perseverance.
And my father, may he rest in peace.
About the Author
I was born into a family of business elites in Pakistan in the 1977, but our family’s journey to success was not without hardship. My grandfather was a lawyer who passed away when my father was only 20 years old. My mother’s family migrated from Kashmir when Pakistan came into existence. After my grandfather’s death death, our family experienced financial difficulties, despite my grandmother being part of the top five families in Pakistan who owned the company PEL. Unfortunately, after my grandfather’s passing, his brothers did not give my grandmother her rightful share, leaving us with limited resources. It was then that my father decided to take matters into his own hands and started researching various business opportunities. He ultimately began his career by buying a single taxi and expanding his fleet to 22 within a year. He also secured an agency to sell foreign cars in Pakistan, and his company, along with two brothers, Javed Ahmed Motors, became the first in Pakistan to introduce car leasing with an advertisement that offered cars for as little as one rupee a month. My father continued to thrive in the business world, founding Javed Ahmed Exports, a carpet export company, and DS textiles, a knitwear measuring company that exported garments to the United States and the United Kingdom. He also started two spinning mill companies DS Textiles, DS Industries, and a financial brokerage house by the name of Pervez Ahmed Securities. His success led him to become a founding member of the Lahore Stock Exchange, eventually serving as its president, and serving on the board of Habib Bank Limited, the largest bank in Pakistan at the time. Despite starting his business career by selling his mother’s jewellery to buy his first taxi, my father’s drive and determination prove that there is no limit to success.
I had the privilege to study at the best high school of Pakistan, Aitchison college. Aitchison College is a prestigious independent boys’ boarding school located in Lahore, Pakistan. It was founded in 1886 by Sir Charles Umpherston Aitchison, who was then the Governor of the Punjab. The school has a long and rich history, and has produced many notable alumni who have gone on to become successful in a variety of fields, including politics, business, and the arts. Aitchison College has a reputation for academic excellence and provides a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for higher education both within Pakistan and abroad. In addition to academic pursuits, the school places great emphasis on extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and drama. The college’s facilities are world-class, and include a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a gymnasium, and a theater. Admission to Aitchison College is highly competitive, and prospective students must pass an entrance exam and an interview in order to be considered for admission. The school is known for its strict discipline and high standards, and students are expected to maintain a high level of academic and personal excellence throughout their time at the school. Overall, Aitchison College is considered one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Pakistan, and has a long-standing reputation for producing some of the country’s most talented and successful individuals.
After Aitchsion college, I went to Marymount College in USA in 1996 for a year. Marymount College is situated on a picturesque bluff on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Marymount California University was a South Bay gem revered for its intimate learning environment and tight-knit, family-like community.
Founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1932, Marymount embraced its Catholic identity. First, as an all-girls high school, then as a liberal arts college for women and California’s first Catholic junior college and eventually as a four-year university offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Having moved frequently in its early years, the school arrived at its final ocean-view address in 1968. Thousands of Mariners fondly remember some of their best years at the Rancho Palos Verdes campus overlooking Catalina island, many who went on to significant accomplishments in their careers, leaving their own marks on the world.
I was introduced to the captivating realm of acting, filmmaking, screenwriting, direction, and production, which completely fascinated me with its unique teaching methods. It was a stark contrast to the education I had grown accustomed to at Aitchison College, which followed a British-style curriculum. I vividly recall reaching out to my late father, may his soul rest in peace, to share my newfound passion and express my desire to pursue a major in performing arts and film studies. His response was candid yet thought-provoking: he insisted that if my chosen field of study did not align with business, I should either return to Pakistan or bear the financial responsibility myself.
Then I left for east coast to do my business management degree from Clark University, but I kept on taking extra courses in performing acts and film making. Clark University is a remarkable institution that has left an indelible mark on my life. As a student, I was impressed by the university’s commitment to research, innovation, and social justice. The faculty members were not only experts in their fields but were also dedicated to helping students achieve their full potential. The university’s interdisciplinary approach to education allowed me to explore various fields of study, and I found myself challenged and inspired by the diverse perspectives and ideas that I encountered. Beyond the classroom, Clark University’s strong community provided ample opportunities for personal growth and development. Overall, my time at Clark University was an incredibly enriching experience that prepared me well for the challenges of the business world. I will always be grateful for the knowledge, skills, and values that I acquired during my time at this exceptional institution.
After completing my degree in 2000, I returned to Pakistan and joined the family business. With a passion for entrepreneurship, I founded several successful companies over the course of my 22-year career.
My first venture was H.I.A Production, which produced the popular sitcom Masti. The show was purchased and aired on Indus TV in 2002, one of the most viewed channels at the time.
Together with my friend Tariq Elahi, I founded Best Value Sportswear while studying at Clark University. The company designed and exported a clothing line from Pakistan to the United States.
In 2003, I formed Fiza Limited, a clothing company that became renowned for its female clothing brand, Fiza.
With my elder brother, Ali Pervez, I established Infiniti Buying Services in 2001. We became agents of PVH Corp, one of the world’s largest apparel companies, and also represented PerryEllis, Russel Corporation, and Uneek Apparel.
In 2006, I founded Infinite Securities Limited, a financial brokerage house with a paid-up capital of $4,166,666 US. Although the company was set to be listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in 2008, the 2008 financial meltdown prevented its listing. However, I still hold 95% ownership of the company.
DS Industries was founded by me and my family in 2006, and we took it public in 2008.
I founded Origins Fabric in 2011, a printed fabric brand that complemented my family’s already established female clothing brand, Origins Ready to Wear.
Zeniya Lawn was established in 2010 with my elder brother.
In addition to my successful business ventures, I also established the Sunshine Trust, a non-profit organization that operates the Sunshine School. The school provides quality English-medium education to 900 underprivileged students.
In 2017, I formed Elite Brands Limited with my friend Sherry. The company is a distribution company that has quickly become one of the top brands in the country, with a turnover of 30 million RS in just three years.
I used to be a dedicated workaholic, fully immersed in my business endeavors. Like many others, my life has had its ups and downs. However, two years ago, the world was suddenly hit with the COVID-19 pandemic. It felt as though everything had come to a sudden halt. I was struck with fear, knowing that my loved ones and I could be at risk of getting infected. Sadly, I saw many people succumb to the disease, including my sister’s best friend and two of my best friend’s aunties. My friend himself contracted the virus and almost lost his life, causing him to lose partial vision in one of his eyes. The pandemic forced the world to pause and reflect, and I was no exception.
For over two decades, I had been consumed with my work, but during the lockdown, I started to discover my family and myself. My eldest son, who was sixteen at the time, had a keen interest in exercise and fitness. We decided to set up a gym at home, and I started working out with him. To my surprise, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed going to the gym. This was the first time I had ever exercised in this way.
The pandemic reinforced something that I have always
