Chapter 1
Gold!
Gold!
shouts a voice. A young man runs through the streets of a dusty California town. He waves his arms in the air. I found it! Gold!
You can’t help but smile. It feels like the whole world has gold fever. Ever since the precious metal was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, the California Gold Rush has been on. People from around the country—and the world—are flocking to the hills of northern California to seek their fortunes.
You don’t blame the man for his excitement. Like so many others, you are hoping to strike it rich. But the truth is, it’s not that easy. For every prospector who lives the dream, there are many more who fail. Some even lose their lives in the process. Gold is big business. Everyone wants their piece of the rush. Some people are willing to lie, steal, cheat, and even kill to get it.
You’ll have to use your wits if you want to strike it rich. It will take smarts, hard work, and a whole lot of luck to be one of the few who succeed.
A newspaper advertisement for a steamship to take passengers to California in 1849There are many paths to success. Many prospectors turn to panning. It’s as simple as it sounds—using a metal pan to search for nuggets of gold in streams and rivers. Some get more serious, digging into rocky land in search of big strikes. Others don’t look for gold at all. They seek out opportunities running shops, banks, and other business that prospectors need.
Any path can lead to riches—or disaster. It’s all about the choices you make.

Chapter 2
A Flash in the Pan
The sun beats down on you. Sweat drips into your eyes. Carefully, you make your way down a rocky ravine. Each step is an adventure, as rock crumbles away beneath your feet.
As much as you’re struggling to find safe footing, the young woman in front of you seems completely at home. Her steps are effortless, barely shifting the rocks below at all. Kalapine looks back over her shoulder. Her long, dark hair blows in the wind. Almost there,
she says. Her English is good,
