    The Gods Are At War

    The Gods Are At War

High in the sky, higher than even the loftiest clouds, sits the magnificent home of the Greek gods. With the pillars made from the finest marble and the doors carved from the purest of pearls, they would forgive you for thinking nothing ever went wrong here. But nothing could be further from the truth. The gods shuddered in their thrones, made only of gold, silver, and platinum, with their iconic items right beside them, ready to use at a moment’s notice. And sitting amongst them was the cause of their discomfort. Hades, the god of the Underworld, had just requested that his domain get expanded.

Leaning forward, Hera asked one simple yet direct question to Hades.

Hades, my dear brother, why does the Underworld need to be larger?

Sensing the challenge in the question, Hades played it to his advantage.

Well, Hera, if you took enough time from cursing every woman that comes within six miles of your husband, you would notice that the humans are fighting wars. And some of those wars some of you instigated, some that are seated here today. And because of those wars, there are so many souls coming in that poor old Charon is down to his last set of bones.

There were a few sets of nervous murmurs from around the room, none enjoying the idea of an expanded Underworld or being called out for causing wars. Ares and Athena in particular since wars fell into their domain. After the murmurs had died down, Poseidon’s snarky voice filled the room.

Isn’t that good for your army, seeing as it adds numbers to your ranks?

Hades clutched at his heart as if struck by a mortal blow, his breathing intensifying as if it were his very last.

Poseidon, it would do you well to banish such thoughts from your waterlogged mind, started Hades.Even if I were to use souls, Zeus forbids, most of them would be ineligible for my army because of an agreement that you and a certain bolt slinging deity had me endorse that made any soul that entered Elysium an angel.

Well, how would we know whether you stuck to the agreement? You are Hades, Zeus asked.

He knew what they were trying to do, play the Hades card to get more sympathy from the other gods. It was a gimmick as old as time, and yet, it somehow always worked. Zeus and Poseidon always got the other gods on their side. But this time, he would not back down. Between the storms in the sky and the seas and the wars, the Underworld was really at its limit. Even Tartarus was getting full. And it wasn’t just him who was having this issue. Loki, Anubis, and Umbria were all having the same issue, as were the gods who fell under them. The problem was, for any of them to do anything, they had to get the support of their respective pantheon, which was why he was here. Hades was now regretting not taking Anubis up on his offer to help, as he somehow got his pantheon, especially Osiris, who was traditionally the Egyptian god of the Underworld, but it was run more so by Anubis.

How couldn’t I? One of you is always in the Underworld making sure that I am adhering to it. And anyway, Zeus could always ask his daughter.

Zeus and Hera both grimaced at the comment. Hades knew that the defection of their precious daughter to the Underworld army was something that they just could not and would not accept it. And as much as he needed them to be on his side, he just couldn’t let the jab pass. It was inhis nature.

Well, it looks as if we’re done discussing. Should we put it to a vote? Poseidon said.

One by one, the gods nodded. Knowing that he was fighting a losing battle, Hades agreed.

Very well, all those for the expansion raise your hands.

As expected, only Hades raised his hand.

Well, Hades, it seems like you won’t be getting your Underworld expanded today it seems.

Struggling to keep his temper in check, Hades stood up and headed to the teleporter that led to the Underworld. But before he left, Hades turned around and faced the gods one last time.

You have stood against me for the last time. Now you will have to live with the consequences of your decision.

And with that last threat, Hades warped out of Olympus, furious.

ONE OF THESE DAYS, I will grab that bolt slinging god’s stupid thunderbolt, bend him over and shove it up his idiotic...

Ahem, is it safe to assume that the negotiations to expand the Underworld didn’t go as planned?

Startled, Hades spun around and blasted off some fireballs, nearly burning his loyal general.

Persephone, you startled me. I keep telling you to give me some warning before you enter.

He would not harm her. Despite being a spitting image of her parents, Persephone was a capable general and a fighter, and that allowed her to rise quickly through the Underworld ranks. She was also one of Hades’ most trusted confidantes and that made her Hades’ right-hand woman. If you wanted to get to Hades, more often than not you would have to go through Persephone.

    You didn’t answer my question.

She does not beat around the bush.

No, it did not. All the other gods voted against it.

Did you make some snide comments that would have made them want to vote against you, despite the arguments you made?

Does nothing ever get past this woman? It was as if she was there in the room while I was arguing with her relatives.

It’s safe to assume that your silence confirms my statement?

    Yes, yes it did.

It’s a wonder why they never side with you, she lamented. Would it hurt for you to appease their egos?

It probably would, but he would not tell her that. If he did, she would probably chastise him for the next ten hours about how he needed to be smarter and/or more pragmatic. If she could, she would probably roast him over his head for his stupidity. And he wouldn’t blame her.

    Accidental Sacrifice

In the capital of Ed’gra’in , a mother and her daughter were having a conversation about the girl’s future.

Sweetie, are you sure you want to go through with this? I mean, there’s no harm in not going.

The 19-year-old looked at her mother for a few seconds, before looking at the imposing castle towering over her. For the past year, ever since she got that mysterious letter, she has looked forward to this day. She never seemed to get along with her age mates in her previous school, and she was constantly bullied. And no matter what she said or did, she was constantly at fault, at least according to her teachers. So she was eager to get into a school where she might fit in.

Yeah, mom, I’m going through with this. For my whole life, I felt like I didn’t fit in where I was, so maybe this was where I was meant to be.

The older lady looked at her daughter with compassion twinkling in her brown eyes. Ever since she and her husband laid eyes on her, they knew she was special. And she knew all
