PROLOGUE
Thousands of years ago, before the first millennia, the Gods roamed in both the Heaven and the Earth Realms. In the Earth Realm, Supernaturals lived together with humans. As the centuries went by, the Gods saw that some Supernaturals started to have little regard for the lives and rights of humans. They had started using them as slaves, sex objects, food sources, whatever they desired, without repercussions or consequences. The Gods from all over the world congregated and agreed to form a Council that would enforce laws and rules to govern Supernaturals living in the Earth Realm. They gathered at the ancient Temple in Lycopolis, Egypt, where a portal to the Heavenly Realm exists. There the Gods agreed that Anubis, being the most just and compassionate God, should be the protector of the humans in the Earth Realm. It was agreed among the Gods to create a Council, composed of at least one of each species, with Anubis being the final decision maker on all issues. The Council was to be the guardians against corrupt Supernaturals.
Anubis then had Rings of heavenly silver forged in the Realm of the Gods. They were adorned with the most precious and magical of stones, Blood Red Painite. This Ring allowed any being to become as immortal as he was, also gaining the ability to flit to any destination within seconds, with only a thought. The one directive that was agreed upon by the Gods was that the Council was to remain secret to all in the Earth Realm. If any human or Supernatural were to discover the existence of the Council, they were to be immediately silenced. It was forbidden to reveal knowledge of the Council to any outsider. And so, it was for thousands of years.
DESERT IN CALIFORNIA
Detectives Roberts and Duran stand next to the body of a young eighteen-year-old woman, solemnly looking on as the forensic team processes both the body and the crime scene. Oddly, they are accompanied by an audience of black crows perched on the wire fence just three feet away, ominously watching and listening. What a surreal moment this seems to Detective Roberts. He quietly inquires. Are all her bones broken, like the others?
The technician nods his head, without looking at him, answers. Yes.
The detectives turn and stare at each other, contemplating what they both know and are agreeing on, without even speaking. I suppose we should notify the FBI.
Detective Duran says more as a statement than a question. Yup.
Roberts responds.
LYCOPOLIS, EGYPT: THE COUNCIL
Asim is standing by the window in his office, overlooking the city. He is in a melancholy mood today. Even though it has been a little over seventy-seven years since he lost his mate, Omari, and his brother, Darius, he still has a hard time accepting what had happened. To him, being immortal, seventy-seven years is just like yesterday. Every time he thinks of them, he curses himself for allowing them to go on that fateful mission. He thought she was safe; she was with his brother, both being two of the most powerful Immortals on earth. For thousands of years, nothing has ever harmed any of them in the Council. Few things could hurt an Immortal, much less kill one. The loss of eight Council Members that day shook him to the core. He was not the only one to lose a mate that day. Many on the Council have still not recovered from that loss.
Interrupting his thoughts, Aya, the mate of his lost brother enters. Asim, the Council is getting ready to convene, your presence is needed.
He nods his head in acquiescence. I will be there shortly.
With nothing but a thought, Asim is at the entryway to the Council Chamber in the Temple at Lycopolis. To the naked eye of humans, it looks like ruins of an ancient temple from thousands of years ago. In truth, it is as magnificent now as it was when it was first erected. Only through a Council Member or powerful magic, could one enter the Temple in its true form. Asim walks past the two giant statues of Anubis, his great, great grandsire. They look like guards protecting the entrance to the Council Chamber. He wonders if Anubis is going to be at the Council today. More and more, Anubis has been staying in the Realm of the Gods, only coming forth to the Earth Realm for certain matters. As the centuries pass, Anubis has been giving Asim more responsibility.
Asim enters the Council Chamber and takes the less extravagant seat next to Anubis, who is already in attendance. Anubis is sitting on his throne made of gold, encrusted with precious diamonds and gems. As always, it tugs at his heart to see the empty chair on the other side of Anubis that belonged to his brother, Darius. He stares at the other seven empty chairs of members that had also perished that day.
Asim snaps out of his thoughts, and everyone gets quiet as the Goddess Huitaca humbly bows her head and speaks, she looks directly at Anubis. My lord, Members of the Council, I have disturbing news from the Crows in America. There are young human girls being killed and their bodies being thrown in the desert.
Asim looks at her skeptically, then calmly asks. How do you know it is our problem and not a problem of the humans?
She turns to Asim and responds. Because the Crows have reported that every bone in their bodies has been broken when they are found. Furthermore, the Crows maintain that the girls are bitten and marked in an attempt to be turned into Werewolves. Unfortunately, we all know that it is very uncommon for a human to successfully make that transition. That is why it has been forbidden in almost all packs for centuries.
Anubis stands and with a loud and deep voice, he bellows. Huitaca, instruct the Crows to be extra vigilant. I want to know exactly where the bodies were found.
In the desert by Las Vegas, Nevada, my lord.
Huitaca replies. Have them circle the surrounding areas and report back to you any suspicious activity. Asim, you are to handle this. Take two others of your choice and go investigate immediately. Bring back the responsible parties to my Temple for judgment. I will not have this start all over again after all these centuries.
Anubis orders.
Asim bows his head to Anubis. He turns to Alvar, Prince of the Dark Elves. Would you please...
Before he could finish his request, Alvar jumps up and speaks. I will be going with you, my lord.
He bows to Asim. Asim now turns to ask the female Black Wolf, Hasina, to accompany him, when Aya stands up. I would like to volunteer to accompany you also, my lord.
Asim immediately refuses her. I am sorry Aya. I wish Hasina to accompany me.
But my lord, I...
Asim cuts her off. I will not take any chances with your life.
My lord, I can take care of myself, you do not need to protect me!
I am sorry Aya, you are not coming with me. I am taking Hasina.
She knows better than to argue any further. Once Asim makes up his mind, he rarely relents. She turns to Anubis and bows her head and asks to be excused. Anubis bows his head, acknowledging her. She turns and walks out of the Chamber, angry.
SUMMER SKY
Standing naked, with my hair wrapped in a towel on top of my head, I wipe the mist off the bathroom mirror to look at my face. I am a twenty-five year old She-Wolf, without a mate. I do not want or have time for a relationship, worse, a possessive mate. Most Supernaturals are really possessive with their mates and worse if he happens to be an Alpha Werewolf. More than likely, I would be mated to an Alpha, as my father is Alpha Alexander Mondragon of the Black Hills Moon Pack. He is the most feared Alpha of the largest pack in America. The thought of having a mate trying to control everywhere I go is very unappealing to me. As it is, I really have a hard time hiding all my activities from my father and mother. It’s not that I am doing anything bad, but they definitely would not approve. It is commonly known in the Supernatural world, the world that humans know nothing about, we generally stick to our own kind. The sad fact is that not all species believe in intermingling and associating with each other. Racism is not only for humans. It is not necessarily a taboo, like mingling with humans is. However, if you come from a conservative pack or community, it can be a problem, sometimes a big problem. The different species tend to be untrusting and suspicious of each other.
I am currently getting ready to meet up with my colleagues
to go over the final manuscript
for our book. Well, that is what I tell my parents. I need to be able to leave the pack’s grounds unaccompanied. Being an unemployed history professor of Pharaonic Egypt, they believed me when I told them I am writing a book and collaborating with some colleagues. You would think that at twenty-five years of age, I could do as I wished, but not when you are the only daughter of an Alpha Werewolf. He would not be too understanding or happy to know exactly who my closest friends and allies really are. It is best that I keep everything a secret for now.
I have never really felt comfortable sharing my dreams and feelings with anyone, not even my parents. As far back as I can recall, I have had these dreams that seem so real to me. I wake up crying, longing for something, not understanding what it was I was missing. I would wake up and feel very sad and lonely, becoming distant for days. My parents had become quite concerned about the effects these dreams were having on me. They were fearful that something might be mentally or emotionally wrong with me, or that I might become permanently depressed. At an early age, they began taking me to see the pack’s psychologist, which I did not like. I soon realized that it would be better to let everyone think I no longer had dreams that caused me to get sad and depressed. Everyone believed me, even my best friend. So, no one suspects me, and my secrets are my own.
Everyone in my circle is trustworthy and either a doctor, or a professor like myself. All of us have different abilities and are great warriors. The other thing we have in common are the dreams. We found each other on a hidden website, exclusively for Supernaturals that feel out of place in the community of their own species. Each of us share feelings of being lonely, isolated, and alienated. In the beginning of our acquaintance, we were cautious in revealing what was happening to us. We were not very forthcoming about our private nightly torments. Once we established that we were having the same dreams followed by intense feelings of sadness and loss, we opened up to each other. Something is going on with all four of us, whatever it is, we are sure we are all connected somehow. It has been such a relief to be able to share feelings with others. People that totally understand because they are also experiencing the same thing. When we first met in person, it was amazing how quickly we felt so comfortable with each other. Immediately, we became loving and trusting friends to one another. It is as if we have known each other forever.
Yazmin was the first to suggest we meet in person. She comes from a long line of powerful Witches and Warlocks, and she is also a physician and a healer. She was adamant about our being able to feel each other’s energy. That is what I like most about her, she is honest and says everything she is thinking up front, no games, no lies, no nonsense. Yazmin lives in New Mexico. She is a small framed woman with big, dark chocolate brown eyes that can see right through you. Her long hair is black as coal, falling straight down her back past her waist, with creamy coffee colored skin. She is very exotic looking. Yazmin is not only a medical doctor, but also a Witch with exceptional powers and abilities. Most importantly, she is dedicated to our cause, and a valuable asset and friend.
Then, there is Ezzy, the first Demon Werewolf hybrid I have ever met. He is a professor of American Indian History. He stands 6’3" with penetrating, mischievous brown eyes that could turn deadly in seconds. His real name is Esadowa Alo which literally translates to Wolf Spirit Guide. Ezzy has Demon blood from his mother and Alpha blood from his father, which makes him very powerful, formidable and dangerous.
The last of our circle is Doctor Clayton Maxon De Leon, who is a veterinarian, and one of the few true Shapeshifters left in the world. He has the ability to shift into any animal he wishes. He is old, but looks to be around thirty-six or so. A handsome, attractive man that exudes strength and masculinity, thoughtful, always thinking before he speaks. He is a quiet man that seems to keep things to himself. I still do not know much about him, even so, something inside me knows that I could trust him with my life.
Tonight, is a big night for us. We rented a house for a few days to spend together. Yazmin has a new spell that she has been working on and wants to try. It needs to be done with all of us together. We are all excited and happy. This is the first time we will be staying together in the same house. Maybe the mystery of the dreams and our connection will finally be solved.
THE RED WOLF
I am watching her as she leaves her territory, not daring to get too close. Knowing that I have to be extremely careful so as not to be noticed. Have been lucky so far for three months that I have been following her. I saw her at the biannual Tournaments and Mating Run, and knew I had to have her as my mate. My unmated warriors went there hoping to find their mates, but no such luck. With the dwindling number of She-Wolves being born, it is unlikely that all my warriors would find mates. I will have to continue kidnapping human girls in an effort to turn them into Werewolves. Then, they would be forced to become mates to my pack members. Werewolves are far more powerful when they are mated. The reason I prefer taking human girls is because they are easier to control. Kidnapping a She-Wolf could be a whole lot of trouble, it could even start a war. My pack is not strong enough or ready for a war just yet. The plan is to forcibly merge my pack with weaker packs, to become bigger and stronger. What is most important to me right now is to get mated to Summer Sky. Werewolves give their powers to each other when they are mated. I can sense her Alpha power, and also see what an exceptional warrior she is. As my Luna, I can just imagine the power I will have when we are mated, two Alphas. Nothing is going to stop me from having her.
Summer’s father, Alpha Alexander, is well known for his strength and power, he can also be ruthless. That is why he has his territory and family well-guarded and protected. Summer is rarely allowed to leave the territory alone. This really works to my advantage because there is only one way in and one way out. It is easy to see her come and go, which makes it easy to know where she is at all times. Something is going on with her, but I cannot figure out what it is. When she leaves, she always drives to the No Worries Bar
in New Mexico, which is a five hour trek. What is she doing that compels her to make this long trip at least twice a month? She usually leaves pretty early in the morning, then turns around and comes back home that same night.
It is always the same three people she is meeting. One is a woman that I sense is a Witch, I find her very attractive and appealing. I just might snatch her too, could always use another Witch. Maybe I could train her to be like Darla, an obedient submissive. The other two are men, they might be trouble. One is an Alpha and the other is a mystery to me. I can’t make out what he is, it makes me uneasy. I know he has powers, just not sure what they are. When I am ready to take the women, I will kill them both.
This time is different, she is not going to the regular bar, she is heading towards Colorado. What is my soon to be Luna up to?
SUMMER SKY
I notice this big, black, monster truck has been following me for the last three hours. I wonder if my father put a bodyguard on me, thinking I wouldn’t notice. Umm, if I call to ask him, and it isn’t him, he will just insist that I turn around and go back home. Worse, he could send a helicopter out to come and get me. I definitely don’t want that. What should I do? I know, I will just call Clayton and see what he thinks. Clayton.
Hello darling, are you almost here, is everything okay?
Clayton asks when he answers his phone. Yes, no, maybe, I seem to have a tail. I don’t want to call home and ask if it’s my father, that could turn out disastrous. I need suggestions.
Clayton thinks for a minute. Well, where exactly are you?
He asks. I’m coming up on Teec Nos Pos.
Great, get off the highway and go to the Teec Nos Pos Trading Post. The owner there is my good friend, Tazo. I’ll call ahead and tell him you are coming, so he can wait for you outside. Go inside with him and wait for me there and I will come and get you.
He states. Great! Thank you, Clayton, you are such a sweetheart!
When I drive into the parking lot of the trading post, I see a very large Native American man with long black hair sitting on a chair with a long rifle on his lap. When he sees me, he gets up and walks over to my car to open the car door for me. Summer Sky, I presume?
Tazo says with a smile, extending his hand to help me. Yes, I am. I am so sorry to bother you with this.
As I finish my sentence, we both turn to see the black truck drive by. Is that the truck that has been following you?
He asks. Yes, maybe, maybe I am mistaken, he just drove past us without even looking our way. Other people do travel from Arizona to Colorado.
I laugh. Maybe.
He replies, sounding not so convinced. Were you able to get his license plate number?
He asks. Yes, I did while I was driving.
Good, Clayton can have it run when he gets here. No point in taking any chances. Hey, are you hungry?
He inquires. I could eat.
I answer with a smile. We go inside to eat what smells like delicious fry bread. We eat and talk while waiting for Clayton. I really like him.
THE RED WOLF
I see her turning into the trading post up ahead. It is best not to follow her in, I am not ready for her to see me yet. I will just keep driving until they go inside, then make a U-turn and go back. I will wait to see what she does next. That big guy is waiting for her and he looks ready for trouble. She must have gotten suspicious of me, being on the same road as her for hours. If she decides to have my plates run, it would take her a long time to find out anything. All my cars and property do not lead to me easily. It is extremely hard for anyone to track me down.
There is no place to park that she would not see my truck when she walks out. I will have to drive a couple of miles down the road, then shift to my wolf and run back to the trading post. With the potion Darla gave me, they will not be able to detect that I am a Werewolf. This way, I can get closer and possibly hear what is going on. Interrupting my train of thoughts, the phone rings. It’s my Beta, Silas. This better be important.
What a disappointing phone call. Shit, I was really hoping that the human girl, Jenny, would survive the change. It is not just my Beta that needs a mate, all the warriors do. They are getting restless and frustrated without mates. Why has the Moon Goddess forsaken us, I wonder for the hundredth time. It doesn’t matter, I don’t need her. I will create mates for my pack on my own. Even if it takes one hundred humans, eventually some will survive. I hope they dispose of the body better this time than they did the last two times. If not, I will have to mete out harsher punishment. It somehow now seems more urgent than ever, I must get Summer now and make her my Luna. It will attract other unmated She-Wolfs to come and mate with my warriors. After all, she is the daughter of Alpha Alexander. It stands to reason any pack that has her as their Luna, will also become feared and respected.
I will shift back now and run back to the trading post. Upon quickly shifting back to human form, I put a tracker on her car, shifting back to my Wolf, I go to the side of the building, making sure no one sees me.
I have been waiting for about twenty minutes now, nothing is happening. Then, I see a hawk circling the post. It lands next to the door and immediately shifts into human form. It is the guy that I could not sense. He is a Shifter! He turns and looks straight at me. We lock eyes. For a minute, I think he knows I am a Werewolf, but no, he turns around and goes inside. I will have to thank Darla for giving me such a powerful potion to hide my scent. Have to say it came in handy. I wish I could hear what is being said, but these walls are extra thick and fortified so I can’t hear anything. I better get back to my truck.
