About this ebook
Over several years the armies of Carthage and Rome have fought each other to a bloody stalemate. Neither can gain a decisive advantage on land. On the sea Carthage's fleet reigns supreme, and the tiny Roman navy is no match for the bigger, faster, more numerous, and better-trained Carthaginians.
It is 264 BC, and the First Punic War is going nowhere fast.
David Bowman
Born in 1956 in the East Anglian Fens in England, David moved to Nottingham to study for his business degree. In line with the current myth of the time, he met and married a local girl, and they have now been married for 44 years. They still live within 10 miles of Nottingham and have two adult children, and have happily become grandparents five times over. Following a career in software development and IT management, David was forced to give up work in 2005 to look after both his wife and daughter, both of whom were suffering from different life-threatening illnesses. To fill the time and take his mind off of the domestic and financial issues, David eventually turned to his love of both photography and writing. Seven Sisters was the first product of the latter and has been followed by a prodigious number of works.

Dedication
History is written by the winners; for if treason succeeds none dare call it treason? I find the concepts this reveals to be fascinating. I can bore the teeth off anyone at twenty paces at parties if you get me going. Hopefully I won’t bore you here. My thanks as ever to the people who encouraged me to write as a means of escaping the sometimes dreadful realities of life. I truly hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I did writing them.
Carthaginian Empire – Episode 16: Stalemate
The blast of trumpets just outside the gates of the villa they occupied was shatteringly loud. Veranius and the other two senators were almost startled into jumping from the couches on which they reclined.
Do these Africans know nothing of subtlety?
Actius’ plaintive question grated on Veranius, the senior of the three senators.
Hush, the very abrasiveness of their ceremonies is merely a subtle reminder of their power here in Sicily.
His fellow white robed figure subsided, mumbling under his breath. Better watch that one, he thought as he settled back into his couch to
