Rose E Siva
Rose first became involved in working on dinosaur bones in Queensland in 2008. Since then she has qualified as an Honorary Technician with the Australian Age of Dinosaurs in Winton, and worked on the bones from a number of different dinosaurs found in the area. She has also extensively explored sites of dinosaur interest in Australia. This decade long interest has resulted in a number of children's books. Rose's extensive knowledge and experience in the field combined with her work experience in literary support for reading skills, particularly in the school environment, inspired her to write. This has resulted in a series of books written to engage younger readers in interesting, real life situations featuring dinosaurs. Although fiction, her books are based around actual situations with Australian dinosaurs. Rose's books are perfect for early independent readers of mid to late primary school age. CHAPTER 28 - Epilogue
This book has been inspired by dinosaur bones found in Australia, and my thanks go to all the dedicated people who have found, dug up and prepped bones. You are my inspiration and my source of wonderful ideas.
Thanks to Harry Bolton and other nameless folk in Tenterfield and Drake for taking time out of their busy lives to talk to me and share their experiences in the dreadful fires that ravaged the region in 2019. You greatly enhanced my knowledge of the area, and your stories of coping with the fires and their aftermath left me in awe. You are inspiring, resilient people.
Thank you to the enthusiastic young researcher at the Queensland Museum for your interest in and information on Genyornis newtoni. Inspiring!
Thanks to Trove for being there. Trove’s treasure chest of archival material allowed me to look back into the past through newspapers and provide authentic examples relevant to the story line in the book.
And special thanks to my friends who have encouraged me to continue to write, and to Lyn and Wendy for their patient editing and proof reading.
CHAPTER 1
So why not?
demanded Kat. I would have thought after getting stuck in Antarctica and trapped in an opal mine you’d jump at another adventure.
Josh thought back to the last couple of years and how his life had changed. After coming to live with his dad Steve after his mum died, he’d had the opportunity to go to Antarctica with Steve to attempt to retrieve dinosaur bones. Then, when Steve had the crazy idea to make a fortune in opals, Kat and he were almost killed in an opal mine at Lightning Ridge.
You got something better to do?
she demanded. She was really pushing for an answer.
Kat had phoned Josh, asking him to go with her on an outback mystery trip to look at some bones in some random guy’s shed. Josh had been procrastinating for a week. It was December and it was going to be hot out west, and although she was right – his classes had finished and he had nothing better to do – he did have other options, like getting a job at Maccas or stacking shelves at the local supermarket. Both would be in air-conditioned buildings, and he could go to the beach after work. Or maybe he could just stay home in his air-conditioned lounge and watch movies. Steve wasn’t home so he wouldn’t know.
It was the end of his last year at school. Final results would be out in late December and then he would have to decide what he was going to do. Uni, like mum and grandpa would have wanted, or get a labouring job with a mining company on some random outback mine, like Steve suggested. Steve reckoned that was the way to go – that was how he had got a start in the mining industry and look at him now, a rigger, making really good money. That was where he was now – working out on a mine site – and he wouldn’t be back until just before Christmas.
Josh didn’t know. He didn’t know what he wanted to do. Would going to uni be a waste of time and money? He didn’t have a career in mind. Or would it, as his mum would have said, open doors and help him find something he liked? The easy option was to not think about it; stay on the couch in the dark cool lounge and watch movies.
So do you have a better offer?
Kat demanded. She was really persistent Have you got a job lined up?
Not exactly,
he responded. Actually, he hadn’t even tried. Competition for school holiday jobs was pretty fierce and lots of his mates had signed up for work way back in October. He didn’t even have his name on any lists.
Look, Joshua, time to get your butt off that couch and get out in the real world. I’ll be there Sunday to pick you up. We’ll be away for a couple of weeks but you’ll be home by the time Steve gets back from the mines.
‘Joshua.’ When someone called him ‘Joshua’ instead of ‘Josh’ it meant things were serious.
OK, Kat, if you say so,
he relented. See you Sunday.
CHAPTER 2
Josh heard her vehicle pull into the driveway just after 6pm on Sunday. Kat had sent him a text saying she was going to be later than she originally thought. She’d left Adelaide on Thursday, catching up with friends on the way.
Easing herself out of the driver’s seat, she stretched stiffly before walking over to Josh who was standing by the front door. As she gave him a hug Josh noticed how different she looked. Her long brown hair was cut short and she seemed more grown up; her lean body had definitely filled out. More like a woman than a girl. She looked fit and well fed. The last time he’d seen her was more than a year ago at Lightning Ridge. She’d been studying at the University of Adelaide for two years now, and it looked like the life-style suited her.
Hope you’ve got something cold in the fridge, Josh. Man, it’s hot. The old girl told me it was over 35 degrees all day.
She looked back at her ute.
