    Chapter One

It is hard to say who the first person to enter the cube was. No one even knew where it had originated from. Perhaps there was some lab a hundred or so stories underground that came up with it. The substance that formed its interior was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. I know, you might be saying to yourself that the old quote from an ancient book must be true, There is nothing new under the sun. But the cube was new, definitely; and it was now under the sun. Someone released it one day or perhaps one night when the moon was full and round, and the coyote pack was howling as they looked into that silver orb. An occasional owl hooted in time with their chorus then everything suddenly became deathly still. Yes, I am going to say it came one midnight in October. The year? What year was it? OR, what year will it be? Are you ready for hell or will the CUBE be humanities new heaven? Again, the ancient book states that a new heaven and a new earth are coming, does it not?

My grandfather was out checking on some of the cattle when the CUBE arrived. Word came over his old radio that a terrible, north-easterner was coming. He had nearly a hundred head of cattle scattered over a thousand acres. If the CUBE had arrived back a little earlier, he would have been riding a horse, but he was not. He was on an ATV that had very heavy, duty shocks. He had rounded up half of the cattle with the help of Sheba, and Shank, his two border collies. They would bring them into a pen by Jake. He was at the gate waiting. Granddad figured the rest of the herd must be over the hill down by the stream that wound through a quarter of the ranch. It was protected there from the wind. There is something about cattle that can sense a storm. I always knew those big noses of theirs were good for something other than being all slimy, wet, and sticky. Maybe they used them to not only to smell out the sweetest grass but sense an upcoming storm also? Pops had stuck to the trail for two thirds of the way then turned off between two large boulders. He never made it through them. We found him there about 2 am. There was this square thing. That is how I can best describe it. Well, maybe a CUBE would be a better term. When we got to the CUBE, he was inside of it stark naked. We could see him floating around inside as if in space. Sometimes he would be upside down and other times right side up. All of us took turns trying to break him out of his prison but to no avail. The exterior of that CUBE was harder than diamond, I swear. Nothing we tried could even scratch it.

Meanwhile, a hundred or so miles away, Kathy had been out for an evening walk. She often did this. It did not matter what season it was. She would dress for the weather. This evening however, she had not. She was
