Chapter I: Introduction to the Future of Work

The Impact of AI and Automation on Jobs

Hello, dear reader. Welcome to our shared journey into the future of work. It's a journey that's likely to challenge your preconceptions, sometimes feel unsettling, but hopefully will also excite and inspire you.

You might be asking yourself, why do we need to consider the future of work? Isn't work just a part of life's routine, somewhat mundane and constant? The answer lies in the fact that we are living in an era of rapid and radical change. The transformation we're experiencing now is far from routine. Instead, it's characterized by the development and application of technologies that could fundamentally alter the very nature of work

One of the biggest drivers of change is artificial intelligence, often referred to as AI. This term has likely popped up in various contexts in your life, from movies to news articles. If you're picturing highly advanced robots or supercomputers, you're not wrong. But the reach of AI extends far beyond that, and it's becoming more integrated into our everyday lives.

When paired with automation - the use of automatic equipment in a system of manufacturing or other production process - AI has the potential to disrupt the job market in ways we are just beginning to understand. To put it simply, many tasks that were once carried out by humans are now being automated.

Imagine, for a moment, your local supermarket. If you think about it, over the years, you've probably noticed more self-checkout stations. Then there are the online customer service platforms with chatbots. These virtual assistants are capable of simulating a conversation with a human user in natural language. Both of these are examples of AI and automation in action, right in your daily life.

However, this is only the beginning. The changes aren't limited to customer service or retail jobs. They're occurring across a broad range of sectors, from blue-collar jobs in manufacturing and transportation to white-collar jobs in finance and law. The tasks being automated are not just repetitive, manual activities but also those that involve cognitive capabilities.

According to a study by McKinsey Global Institute, approximately half of all work activities globally could technically be automated by using currently available technologies. When applied to the US context, this translates to between 39 million to 73 million jobs, which may undergo automation by 2030.

It's important to clarify that this doesn't mean that all these jobs will vanish in thin air. What it does mean, however, is that these jobs will look very different. Tasks within these jobs will change as some aspects become automated. Consequently, the skills required to succeed in these roles will also evolve.

This dramatic change can feel overwhelming. You might feel like you're standing on shifting sands, unsure of what the future holds. The traditional concept of job security, which often meant staying in one job or one company for your entire working life, is fading away. Now and in the future, job security is more about having the skills and adaptability to move with the changing job market.

But before we get too far down the rabbit hole, I want to emphasize that this book is not about prophesying the end of jobs or sowing fear about the future. Quite the contrary, it's about
