About this ebook

‘Automation Conundrum’ focuses on the evolutionary stages of intelligent automation starting with RPA. This book gives a view on what these technologies are, where and how to apply them across functions and industry sectors and most importantly how to generate the maximum tangible value for the business. It also gives a perspective around the key challenges, risks and opportunities facing industries and how IA can be leveraged to tackle the same. Although, IA has successfully proven to generate business value it has also raised concerns over safety and security. This book also addresses those concerns viz impact on society, governments and need for regulations. In summary, it gives a new perspective to intelligent automation as a beginning of a journey into the future rather than the end.

    Acknowledging contributions

This book is dedicated to God and my colleagues who, over the years, have gone out of their way and helped create value for our organization (where I have worked over the last 25 years) ensuring that the technology team is not seen as a support function but a core mainline function that helps organizations achieve their imperatives. Also, to their families who, steadfastly stood by them to enable my colleagues to give their very best.

    Preface

Ever since we have known of the humans, we have read, heard, and experienced their quest for progress and self-improvement. Whether they moved from hunting to farming, to the industrial age, to the information age, and now the digital age. Humans have applied their mind together with their heart, to improve their lives and those of their fellow human beings. At the centre of that progress has been technology and innovation.

The digital age is upon us and we are already experiencing it. Never did the largest hotel chain ‘OYO’ not own a single room nor the largest cab service ‘Uber’ own a single cab. All this was made possible by technology. In some ways, phone and our digital identity, these days, is as dear to us as our life.

As buzzwords of technology like ML, AI, Blockchain, NLP, Quantum Computing befuddle us and threaten the unread, there is a dire need to cleanse this talk of all the voodoo. This is important so that not only do we understand these technologies, but also how these can be applied in our respective organisations to generate value that we so desire.

During my time at Titan Industries, I had the good fortune of being able to work with a good team that created great products, several great brands but one of the key elements of our growth story was technology, which we leveraged across several parts of the enterprise.

I believe digital is one strategic lever amongst a few others that may help insulate us. CEOs, Boards need to take notice of the digital revolution that is underway. The question posed to us is not whether we need to leverage digital, but how do we leverage digital. It is no longer a choice. Companies also need to be mindful of those marginalised on the account of ignorance of the digital age are cast away to the dungeons of despair of the loss of jobs and livelihoods.

This book by Sandeep Parikh attempts to do exactly that - to introduce the idea of automation for life, or Intelligent Automation as he calls it, and how it can be leveraged in our organisations and society to generate value. The great digital divide is here but it is not here to stay. This book will go some way to help bridge the digital divide

    Author’s preamble

Intelligent Automation (IA) is one of the most prominent and widespread disruptions of our time. Rapidly growing and evolving technology is changing the world and traditional norms. Organizations have experienced driving transformational value at an optimal cost by unilaterally working on the cost alone. There is a constant push to drive efficiencies, eliminate mundane and repetitive tasks, improve controls and compliance, provide end-to-end customer experiences, create innovative products, and deliver a quick and high return on investments.

Leading businesses have already tapped into the potential that technology offers and are reaping benefits from it. Intelligent Automation is constantly evolving, and this dynamic nature is
