About this ebook
The 1991 edition of this book introduced the concept that it is the repetitive-formation
of Transient Linear Elements of Hydration on lipid and poly-ionic surfaces that, not only assist in the assembly of proteins and nucleic acids, but in interactions

THE AUTHOR
Dr. Collins received his degrees in chemistry from Wayne University and the University of Wisconsin. After employment at General Motors Research, E I Dupont Research and Sterling Winthrop Research Institute, he accepted a position as Associate Professor and Department Chairman at Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1967, he returned to the Institute to direct Medicinal Chemistry and Developmental Research until 1987 when he retired to devote full time to his driving interest in the role of water in providing spatial order in living cells.
He has a number of publications and patents to his credit and has had an organic chemistry reagent The Collins Reagent
named after him. However, the study of spatial properties and surface hydration of natural molecules have been his major interest for the past fifty years. This small book provides a pictorial view of how the dynamic interchange between liquid and cubic-ice states of water on surfaces of vital molecules, not only provides direction for assembly, but accompanied by charge-coupling, their interactions with each other.
The book is designed to give those with even a limited understanding of chemistry and physics, a glimpse of three-dimensional images of natural molecules and their spatial relationships with surrounding water. Hopefully, everyone who reads this book may gain an appreciation for the amazing way natural molecules formed and evolved to give us life.
Illustrations were developed on Apple Macintosh and Dell computers using Adobe Illustrator™. Data for structural analyses and the production of drawings were obtained from the published literature. Custom physical model-building was performed primarily with Framework Molecular Model parts (Prentise Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632).
