Book 2 - Lisa B. Diamond
Prologue
David and his twin sister, Ashira, sat at the dining room table eating breakfast. David's brown hair was sticking up a little in the back as usual. His mother, Mrs. Rosen, attributed this to the fact that David liked taking a bath or shower right before bed, thereby going to bed with wet hair, and sleeping at odd angles, causing it to stick up in odd places.
His sister's hair was neatly brushed with red curls falling on her shoulders. Ashira liked to take time with her hair to make sure it looked just right for school, or wherever else she was going.
They were both dressed in their school uniforms of heather gray slacks and burgundy knit polo short-sleeved shirts. Their shirts had a white dragon as its logo in the upper left corner.
David and Ashira didn't attend a normal private school. They attended the Salem Academy for Young Sorcerers. It was a private school for young witches and wizards from third through twelfth grade.
David and Ashira were in third grade. They had only been attending the Salem Academy for a week, although after their first day, they weren't sure if their father was going to let them go back.
Their father was not magical and had been surprised when the twins had received their letters about attending the Salem Academy for Young Sorcerers. Their mother, Mrs. Rosen, had not been surprised. For Mrs. Rosen herself had attended the Salem Academy when she was a girl.
Consequently, when the twins came home after their first day of school to tell their parents about the dragon eggs which had hatched in their classroom, Mr. Rosen had been adamant about the twins not going back.
David had even asked his mother if she could put a spell on their dad to make him believe that he wanted the twins to go back to the Salem Academy.
Mrs. Rosen had laughed. No. That would violate my marriage vows. Your father agreed when we were first married that I had his permission to take his mind off of things that were bothering him for a short period of time so that he could refocus on what he needed to be doing. I am not going to use magic to control him to do what you want him to do, and you are forbidden as well. Do you understand?
she had said firmly.
David had nodded reluctantly.
Mrs. Rosen had noticed that this was the first time David had asked to go to school since he was four. I will do all I can to persuade your father without magic. I promise.
In the end, it was David's best friend's father who convinced Mr. Rosen that the twins should continue their education at the Salem Academy. Sean Shaunessy was David's best friend. His mother and David's mother had gone to the Salem Academy together when they were girls. Both of Sean's parents were magical, and Sean's father reassured David's father of the children's safety in school.
1 – Missing the Bus
M om!
shouted David . Where's my lunch? We're going to be late!
He and Ashira were waiting by the front door, peering out the window, making sure they hadn't missed the bus.
Mrs. Rosen tucked David's lunchbox into his backpack, kissed them both on the cheek, and watched them walk down the driveway. The twins stood by the mailbox and looked down the street, expectantly.
Several minutes passed. Ms. Griffith, their next door neighbor, walked outside to get her paper. She usually saved the comics section for David, as it was his favorite. You two are a little late this morning, aren't you? Your school bus left before you walked down the driveway.
David and Ashira exchanged worried glances. Ashira thanked Ms. Griffith, before running after her brother back into their house.
Mom!
called out David.
We missed the bus!
continued Ashira.
Yes, I gathered that,
replied their mother. She was holding two small stones in her hand. Each stone was gray with the Salem Academy logo, which was a dragon sitting on top of
