INTRODUCTION
If you feel as if you are stuck with some challenge at the moment, just know you are not the only one. We all deal with issues, challenges, and problems. That is what life is all about. You get the sunny days and have to weather the stormy ones. And some of the storms we have to weather can beat us down. We are not equipped to be storm-chasers who are brave enough to face tsunamis head-on. As humans we seek comfort and we don’t want to have to deal with problems and difficult situations. We are more equipped to deal with sunny days. And we want some soft rain now and again - just enough to soothe our dry souls.
Since the pandemic life has just become crazy on many levels. If you find yourself in the middle of your own personal tsunami at the moment, just know you are not alone. And we all hope that this too shall pass. In the meantime, I will try and help with some practical things you can do to make your life easier on some level.
When you are in the centre of the storm you can feel beaten as storms cause a lot of toomuchary to deal with. Life is not like the weather channel where we get a warning that trouble is ahead. And when our storm hits, we are usually out in the open without cover. We can feel defenseless and powerless. We are usually surprised when our storms come and they immobilize us and keep us from acting straight. We thus don’t focus on getting protected and we don’t take the right action and we can’t recover quickly. We usually don’t act before things spin out of control. We end up where things are out of control.
The irony is that what is bad for us is also good for us. That saying, ‘what does not kill you, makes you stronger’, is right on the money. You can in fact be empowered to get through challenges through all your adversity. Getting through a difficult time and surviving it, teaches us something about ourselves. We get empowered to deal with our issues, and be wiser next time there is a storm and we have to brace it. We would not learn those lessons otherwise notwithstanding the fact that they are unpleasant and we would rather avoid them.
Life is remarkably complicated. Sometimes it feels as if life is unfair and then we also get good surprises. But it appears as if others have opportunities to be happy and fulfilled and we just have a bundle of trouble to deal with. And life would have been easier without any adversity but that is not realistic. You can’t expect to live in a world without storms. Life is good, bad, and ugly, and sometimes right-out nasty. Life could give you a big fat blow between the eyes, knock you out of your socks and let you know that you are just a minion in the bigger scheme of things. And when you get to that point, you can feel stuck and see no way out.
When life’s nasty tentacles grab hold of you and you are not armed to deal with the blow, you can be pummeled into a pulp and feel as if you have nowhere to turn, feeling totally helpless, and not seeing an end to it all. Unfortunately we are subjective when it comes to our own problems, and things can spin out of control fast. And then you can get completely immobilized and feel close to giving up.
Your emotions rule and that is what paralyzes you and keeps you from acting appropriately. That is why you get stuck in your storms and feel lost.
We need to be storm-ready and equip ourselves with the right ‘gear’ so we are armored for all things. That means becoming stronger to deal with stuff. And that is something we can all become successful at.
When you feel as if you have more to deal with than other people, just know that we don’t really know what is going on in another person’s life. They might appear sunny and content and behind that facade a whole different nightmare is unfolding.
You can’t believe that other people have everything worked out just because they seem to have no care in the world. But you wish you were in their shoes. You don’t really know what lies beneath their seemingly perfect lives. They might be dealing with their own brand of demons and just be better equipped to deal with that. Maybe they are not coping at all. We hide our inadequacies from the world. And when you go through adversity you sometimes feel embarrassed as you think it is somehow your fault.
Fact is, we can get hit hard and not be equipped to deal with it. And the next person might not think it is that bad. They might just not let their emotions run away with them and manage to stay calm enough to focus on fighting their horrors one bite-size at a time.
We just want the good stuff and we hate the rest of it. Life then smiles down on our fantasy and decides to help us grow up. And then we get the double whammy that we think is so unfair as we don’t deserve it. We need to deal with ups and downs. But it gets really bad when we are going down the rabbit hole and we try to fight it and
