I Chose the Light Within - Brenda T Holmes
PREFACE
Acouple of years ago, Mom shared with me the last of some written pages, half pages, and quarter pages—all from which she had been journaling for a while. Then, on one visit, she pushed them over to me and said these words with somewhat strong admonition … Here you are, take these … you’re the English teacher in the family … write something for when my time comes … see what you come up with.
Now you know, once the command is given, the intent understood, and the facial expression lauded, then we know that the order must be carried out. Her final words were, … and take this picture here, I like that one best.
Thus began my privileged task of putting words together to tell her story from teenager to retiree. Written from her perspective, this is just a small portion of my Mom’s blessed life. As fate would have it, my final push to finish my chronicling came during the height of the pandemic after I heard a sermon at my church entitled, Choose the Light.
I connected its message to Mom’s childhood notes and here we are today!
My siblings and our families are so blessed to still have Mom in our lives, and we thank God as we go about our daily lives loving, honoring, and giving back to her.

INTRODUCTION
Alice Vaughan, my mother, served as a lifelong deaconess at our church up home,
and one of her favorite songs she sang as she bustled around the house was This Little Light of Mine – I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Growing from adolescence into adulthood and journeying along my faith walk, I now know what that little light
has been all my life. It is knowing that the Lord has been speaking and has been pulling me along through some exceedingly difficult times. I have been challenged to listen, to focus, to redirect and now move in a direction according to His Will, and not necessarily mine.
So, following much heartache and redirection, I have chosen to believe in my inner strength even during my outer fears. I am now widowed at the age of thirty-one, and my four daughters need me.
