CHAPTER ONE
The journey had been a long one and even though he hadn’t envisaged it would end here, it seemed like this was where it would end. It had been just two months since he had been bitten by a wolf during one of his evening jogs. He had been transformed into a werewolf. The journey in his life was forever changed as he was dragged into the world of wolves and their prophecies. The world who had to bite him was the leader of the pack. He had died not so long after transferring his blood to wolfman during the biting process. This automatically made Wolfman the leader of the pack.
Wolfman sniffed the air as though to inhale the smell of the musty scent of blood that enveloped the field. He could smell the fear in the air that came from the Turned pack. At this rate, he knew that he would only end up losing more wolves. It was just better they retreated to recuperate and be better.
The sky had turned red as though in solidarity with the dead members of the Turned pack. The battleground was littered with bodies of wolves who had earlier turned from their human selves to wolves. The leader of the pack whom everyone called wolfman as no one knew his real name beckoned to the rest of the pack to retreat.
The battle does not end here. This is just the beginning.
Wolfman said as the remaining members of the Turned pack howled in sadness.
They would meet again with the Forbidden pack and it wouldn’t be as easy as it was for them today.
I can’t believe this is the end of this book. Humph! Cliffhangers and their ability to leave you hanging. I guess that’s why they are called cliffhangers anyway.
Frank murmured to himself as he dropped the book he had been reading, on his work desk in his apartment. It was past 2 pm already and being the immersive reader he was Frank had not had anything to eat since morning when he started reading the book, save a cup of coffee.
If I don’t want to pass out from hunger, I should rush down to La Mounche to get something to eat ASAP,
Frank said as he looked around his apartment in an unconscious effort to record the position of his things. It would make it easy for him to detect if anything was out of place later on. This routine had become a part of him and had saved his life on a couple of occasions.
Frank had been staying in that apartment for the past 6 months and didn’t go out of his way unnecessarily. He didn’t relate with any of the other neighbors as he was simply trying to lay low. He was not sure how long he could avoid speaking to the other members of his residence especially his noisy next-door neighbor.
He sighed in exasperation as he stepped outside his apartment and was bombarded with the sound of his neighbor’s television. His neighbor was such a noisy woman and no matter the number of times he had to try to let her know the reason why she should watch her TV shows on a lower volume, it did not affect her whatsoever. He had since given up.
The last time he had tried talking to her about it, she had told him that she had some hearing issues and there was no way she could hear the TV if the volume was reduced. He had believed her until he heard her speaking clearly with the postman from across the street with no hearing aids. She was a shrewd old woman who derived fun from seeing her TV shows on a loud volume and pretending to her neighbors she had a hearing problem.
Frank just figured that it was the last lap of her life and he should allow her to have some fun even if it was going to be of some inconvenience to him and besides, he was not always in the apartment. So, there was little to be worried about.
La Mounche was just three blocks away from where Frank resided and was one of the best restaurants in that vicinity. It was not a matter of luck or coincidence that La Mounche was close to Frank’s apartment. He had made his investigations well before settling for the apartment.
In addition to this is the fact that Frank also took into account the entry and exit points in the neighborhood and how easy it would be for him to get out in the event of trouble. In his line of work, a person can never be too careful.
Frank was 58 and had curly brown hair. His deep blue eyes did nothing to help him blend into the crowd and that’s why he normally wore brown contact lenses whenever he went on his assignments. Frank is a hitman with an organization called
The Equilibrium" that specialized in assassinating criminals and is one of their best (if not the best) hitman.
Anyone that saw Frank as he walked down the pavement towards the restaurant that hot afternoon would have easily categorized him as one of the thousands of innocent people going about their daily activities but he was not innocent, neither was he going about his usual daily activity.
He was taking a break as he had recently just concluded an assignment the previous night. He had spent the past one week trailing and keeping tabs on a notorious drug dealer who had been supplying the downtown area with tons of heroin. It had gotten to a point where heroin purchase was now as simple as reading the letters of the alphabet. Even young children were handed the product with no questions asked.
It had gotten to a head point and the request had come in from a client that The Equilibrium takes care of the problem by killing the owner of the business.
Only the head of the organization and a few top members knew who their clients were. Some of the other hitmen at the organization always tried to ask to satisfy their curiosity but Pants would never reveal it to any of them. Frank on the other didn’t care about who the clients were. As far as he was concerned, he was fulfilling the wish of the Equilibrium and he didn’t need to know who brought the job before he could do it.
Frank was able to gather information from the envelope that Pants had handed over to him when he was assigned the task, that the owner of the business was a man called Taro and he normally came into the downtown area every Thursday and stayed till Friday to round up all his collections and put fear into the heart of anyone whom he needed to fear him.
Frank tailed Taro to an exotic club on Thursday and on confirming from the bartender there, that Taro would be visiting the same club the next day which was Friday, Frank made up his mind to kill him on that Friday.
On that fateful Friday, Frank distracted Taro’s bodyguards while Taro walked to the underground parking lot to get a suitcase of drugs from his car. Frank accosted him and killed him with a knife while carrying away the suitcase of drugs. He made it look like it was a rival that had killed Taro and this was exactly what was reported by the news the following day.
Frank’s boss at the Equilibrium had called to congratulate Frank on a job well done and told him to go enjoy his break and that was exactly what Frank was doing today as he selected several books to kill time before his next assignment and also stimulate his brain. In the meantime, however, he needed to recharge his body and brain.
Frank, dressed in grey baggy pants and a hoodie, walked casually towards the restaurant talking to himself. He imagined he was Wolfman from the book he had just finished reading as he talked to himself in the character of Wolfman.
In this life, the choice between good and evil is not based on the actions themselves but rather the goal a person seeks to achieve. I have been through it all. I have known it all and I can say to you...
Will you watch where you are going?!
a woman yelled at Frank as they bumped into each other.
He had been so engrossed in his imagination that he didn’t even know when he ran into her.
I’m...m...so...sorry.
Frank stammered as he regained his posture.
Oh please. Sorry does not cut it when you could have been more careful.
She replied as she walked off in anger. As she walked off in anger, her black overall flowed behind her as it seemed to portray all of her anger. It was unlike anything Frank was used to seeing. There was a kind of beauty and defiance about the
