Call to Holiness
Holiness is not of our own human making. Rather, it is being one with God. You shall be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy
(Leviticus 19:2). Obviously, we are called to be like God who is holy. This is what St. Paul calls us to do just as he encouraged Timothy that God will give him the strength he needs to face the challenges of preaching the Gospel. Holiness entails being attentive to the simple and ordinary things of life. As we go through the challenges of life and even the temptations that we often face, it is in those simple things of life that we encounter God who reveals himself to us, assuring us of his ever presence. He speaks words of encouragement to us as he urges us to follow the path he not only designed for us but the only one that can only lead us to true peace. This is how God sustains us, helping us to make that conscious effort to go beyond the self and be united with the other who alone can truly fulfill the self. As the Lenten season is a time to renew our individual relationship with God through our spiritual exercises, holiness also calls us to live in that awareness of the relationship where we rely on the grace that strengthens us to do what we ordinarily cannot do. But when we are truly opened to the grace from on high, holiness would not just be about what we do but who we are.
A Journey of Faith
St. Paul explains that the journey of a believer on this planet is guided by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith is the foundation of a relationship we all have with God. It does not mean we are no longer affected by the realities of the world we live in. There may be times when we may seem overwhelmed by the events of our lives, times when things are not going as planned, times when the world around us turns its back on God, and we either feel abandoned by God, or that evil doers are flourishing. During those times, we should remember the prayer of Jesus for his disciples before his departure, when he prayed to the Father,
