    Foreword

The mission statement at our church, Community of Hope, is as follows:

    Mission Statement

Community of Hope exists to interest disinterested people in Jesus Christ and grow together into fully devoted followers of Him.

We are on a mission to spread the good news, the Gospel! I hope that this book, A Treasure Hunt: Discovering Grandma’s Treasure, will interest you to go on your own. Treasure hunt—fully devoted to following Him.

I have worked with young children from the time I was old enough to babysit.

I taught young children, mostly kindergarten, for thirty years. Then I worked five years for the Department of Early Education as an early learning coach to help set up prekindergartens in the public schools and to help with the new VPK program.

Then I retired, or I thought I had retired, but God had other plans for me. I was asked by the Literacy Coalition to work part-time for the Budding Readers program for three-year-olds. I did that for nearly five years until my grandchildren were born and then I became a grandma enjoying precious time with them, like this Treasure Hunt.

I love working with children, and I have been so blessed to be able to do that for most of my life.

During that time, I have created many songs, poems, and plays. And now this, Treasure Hunt, with my grandchildren.

I hope you enjoy this book, A Treasure Hunt: Discovering Grandma’s Treasure, and that you can go on a treasure hunt of your own.

    Ready, Set, Let’s Go!

    Introduction

First of all, I am not a writer. But with God’s encouragement, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). One of my favorite verses to go to when I need strength: I can write this book through Christ who strengthens me.

A funny story about that verse. We were using that verse as a memory verse at church. I was helping with the children’s ministry. I had just finished helping them to memorize the verse when a little boy came up to me, flipping his little hands back and forth, saying, Look! I have flipping hands! Get it! That just cracked me up!

I am a retired kindergarten teacher, and many times I have heard children repeat something they said, interpret it in a different way, like right after the tragic Columbine shooting, which had just happened. So many children were killed. It was so sad, and it happened at a school.

One day, shortly after that tragic event, we were on the playground when a lawn mower backfired!

All the children came running toward me for protection. They were screaming, There is a man over there, and he shot a gun! I responded, No. There is a man over there on a lawn mower, and the lawn mower backfired! That was enough to satisfy them, and they ran on off to play. A little later, one of my students returned from speech. And just at that time, the lawn mower backfired again! I overheard one of her friends saying to her, Don’t worry! It’s just a man over there, and his back is on fire! Goodness gracious!

Second, I journal. I have journaled every day for the last, nearly ten years. I wish I had started journaling earlier in my life. I started journaling because God put an angel on a tennis court, believe it or not, but that is how God does things to minister to me while I was going through a very dark valley. My angel suggested I journal to God.

I would journal off and on, but I was not consistent until January 1, 2012. It amazes me, even to this day, how God speaks to me through my journaling. Sometimes He speaks to me in the wee hours of the morning, so I keep my journal right next to my bed. I also read a devotional, Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young. I highly recommend this devotional. I do not read it until after I have journaled to God, laying out my thoughts and my heart, praying to God. Many times, and even while writing this book, He has answered me through His Word, the devotional, through other Christian books, sermons, or even other people.

And even today as I am going through the process of transcription, God spoke to
