Chapter One
Jackie and the Ancient Books.
In an ordinary grey city in the most ordinary country you can imagine there lived a girl named Jackie. She was no more than ten years old, but she knew how to read very well for her age. She also knew how to write and play the piano.
The school she attended was quite ordinary too, apart from being very tall, rising high into the sky. Jackie would always sit at the very back of the class where she hoped she wouldn’t get noticed. Everything she had been taught so far
seemed very dull to her. She rarely spoke and so classmates tended to ignore her. To be honest, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to suggest she had no friends at all.
Jackie would go to the library every day when school finished. The library occupied the top two floors of the school. When she felt especially lonely, she climbed the high winding stairs to the very top floor and would select the thickest books she could find. There, she read them until very late in the evening, until her rather plump aunt, the only relative she had, came for her. Her aunt constantly scolded her each time she came, by threatening that she would not come back for her next time.
The school she attended was quite ordinary too, apart from being very tall, rising high into the sky.
On one of those evenings, when Jackie slammed shut
