    CHAPTER 1

    At It Again

Vince and Chad once again looked in. But this time, it was not the home of the king of rock and roll. It was an underground tunnel! A dark cold tunnel that seemed to go on for days. It was kind of scary! All they had were flashlights and each other. Neither of them had food or water.

All they could do was keep walking through this never-ending cold tunnel. Chad flashed his light on Vince. It blinded poor Vince, who tried to push Chad’s arm away from him.

Dude, I’m kind of scared, Chad admitted.

Stop blinding me with your flashlight, scolded Vince. Chad apologized to Vince through chattering teeth. He was both cold and scared. All he could think about was getting out!

The boys started to think they were never going to make it to the end of the tunnel. But they had to push on! I mean . . . what else could they do, right? Going back did go through their minds. But it wasn’t the solution. And, of course, curiosity got the best of them.

As the boys kept walking, their stomachs began to growl. Their feet ached. It almost seemed hopeless to walk any further. It seemed as if they would never reach the end of this long, dreary underpass!

Vince sniffed the air. He stopped for a second. He sniffed the air again. Do you smell that? He grinned. It smells Iike food. I think we are almost out!

No, that was me, sorry. I fart when I’m nervous! Vince just rolled his eyes and went on.

Did you hear that voice a while back saying, ‘Welcome back, boys’? Vince asked Chad, trying to change the focus.

Yeah . . . Yeah, Vince, I did. I heard it. It sounded like Elvis. It was definitely his laugh, he confirmed as he yet again flashed his light right into Vince’s eyes. Vince hit his hand down telling him not to do that again.

Chad exclaimed he thought he heard something move. And that he was only trying to protect him. Vince snapped and yelled at Chad telling him he could take care of himself.

Fine! Chad snapped back. But if we get eaten by something down here . . . Right before Chad could finish his thought, a voice said, Follow my light. At first, the voice startled the boys. Then all at once, they put together whom the voice belong to.

"Elvis! The boys cheered blissfully! Once again, the voice that belonged to the spirit of Elvis was heard again. Follow me." A big bright beam of light was ahead of them. The beam was round and bright. It lit up the entire tunnel! Vince and Chad followed it. This way, they heard the moving beam direct them.

Chad and Vince walked a while before either one of them spoke. Then Chad got curious to where the tunnel led them. So he asked the bright light leading them. "Hell!" the spirit of Elvis yelled and then snickered.

Right after answering Chad, they were at the end of the tunnel, and the spirit of Elvis appeared in front of the boys. Just joking. Elvis laughed. Without further ado, I give you the legendary Beale Street. Elvis extended his arm as he revealed Beale Street for the very first time to the boys. I used the tunnel to come here unnoticed.

The boys just looked at one another and smiled. They continued to listen to Elvis. He told them the tunnel wasn’t even made just for him. It was used to free slaves during the war. I just came down here to relax and get away from it all. Speaking of such, let me take you boys to a restaurant I used to eat at. I’m sure you are hungry.

    I’m starving, Vince told Elvis.

This way. Elvis showed the boys to a restaurant. Do y’all like burgers?

Yes, sir, Chad responded for the both of them.

Then this is the place for you. Elvis walked in right through the door. Chad didn’t realize the door wasn’t open. He also forgot for a second that Elvis was a ghost. So Chad being Chad walked into the door. Vince laughed and opened the door reminding him in a sassy way that Chad was alive, shaking his head as they sat down at a clean table.

Walking in, Chad noticed people pointing and laughing at him. Chad kept his head down low as he walked over to the table. Right away, the two boys picked up a menu. As they were looking over at the menu, Elvis asked the boys not to talk to him. Everyone would think you’re crazy or on something. Just smile and nod. The boys agreed.

A waitress came over and took the boys’ order. Once she walked away, Elvis told the boys all kinds of stories about growing up in Memphis. Before long, the boys forgot all about not talking to Elvis out loud. People kept looking at them funny. But they didn’t care.

Upon leaving the restaurant, some young kid hollered at the boys, saying stuff like, Where’s your imaginary friend? and then laughed. The boys tried to ignore it. This made the young man want to do it all the more. So he started again. Say, who is this Elvis character? He sounds like a homo to me! This got his whole table laughing. In turn, it made Elvis mad! So did Vince. Elvis told Vince to tell the young man to come to him. Vince smiled devilishly.

Hi, why don’t you say that to my face? Chad saw an opportunity to help out. Yeah, but come a little closer ’cause my friend here is a little deaf.

Fine by me, the boy said as he rose and started making his way over. Just as the young man passed them, Elvis pushed him so hard he lost his balance. Vince helped out in his fall by putting his foot out, tripping the young man. The young man fell to the ground! The whole diner was in uproarious laughter.

Vince, Chad, and Elvis ran out to the end of the block laughing the whole way. Man, I love going back! So many memories on this street. Elvis continued to tell the boys he started his singing career on Beale Street. They got me started, he began to explain. The boys interrupted and told Elvis that they knew all about it, at Sun Records.

Elvis thought it was cool the boys knew so much about him. He wanted them to get more familiar with his heydays, so he told them where he used to hang out. One of my hangouts was at Ellis Auditorium. I also ate at the Arcade. But you got to be careful at night!

Elvis looked at the boys. He had an idea in his
