The book of I’tikaf
Chapter 232
I`tikaf (Seclusion in the Mosque) in the Month of Ramadan [1268-1270 of 1896]
1268. Ibn ‘Umar g reported: The Messenger of Allah s used to observe I’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1269. ‘Aishah j reported: The Prophet s used to engage himself in I’tikaf (seclusion for prayers) in the mosque during the last ten nights of Ramadan till he passed away; thereafter, his wives followed this practice after him. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1270. Abu Hurairah g reported: The Prophet s used to observe I’tikaf every year (during Ramadan) for ten days; in the year in which he passed away, he observed I’tikaf for twenty days. [Al-Bukhari].
The book of Hajj
Chapter 233
The Obligation of Hajj (Pilgrimage) and its Excellence [1271-1284 of 1896]
Allah, the Exalted, says:
And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e., denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
(3:97)
1271. Ibn ‘Umar g reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, "(The superstructure of) Islam is based on five (pillars), testifying the fact that La ilaha illallah wa anna Muhammad-ar-Rasul-ullah [there is no true god except Allah, and Muhammad (s) is the Messenger of Allah], establishing As-Salat (the prayers), paying Zakat (poor due), the pilgrimage to the House [of Allah (Ka’bah)], and the Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1272. Abu Hurairah g reported: The Messenger of Allah s delivered a Khutbah and said, O people! Hajj (pilgrimage to the House of Allah) has been made incumbent upon you, so perform Hajj.
A man inquired: O Messenger of Allah, is it prescribed every year?
He s remained silent till the man repeated it thrice. Then he s said, Had I replied in the affirmative, it would have surely become obligatory, and you would not have been able to fulfill it.
Afterwards he said, Do not ask me so long as I do not impose anything upon you, because those who were before you were destroyed on account of their frequent questioning and their disagreement with their Prophets. So when I order you to do something, do it as far as you can; and when I forbid you from doing anything, eschew it.
[Muslim].
1273. Abu Hurairah g reported: The Prophet s was asked: Which deed is the best?
He s replied, Faith in Allah and His Messenger.
Then he was asked: What is next?
He replied, Jihad (holy fighting) in the Cause of Allah.
Then he was asked, What is after that?
He s replied, Hajj Mabrur (an accepted pilgrimage).
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1274. Abu Hurairah g reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, Whoever performs Hajj (pilgrimage) and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commits sin, nor disputes unjustly (during Hajj), then he returns from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1275. Abu Hurairah g reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, (The performance of) ‘Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous ‘Umrah; and the reward of Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted) is nothing but Jannah.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1276. ‘Aishah j reported: I said: O Messenger of Allah! We consider Jihad as the best deed, should we not then go for Jihad?
The Messenger of Allah s said, The best Jihad for you women is Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted by Allah).
[Al-Bukhari].
1277. ‘Aishah j reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, There is no day on which Allah sets free more slaves from Hell than He does on the Day of ‘Arafah.
[Muslim].
1278. Ibn ‘Abbas g reported: The Prophet s said, (The performance of) ‘Umrah during Ramadan is equal to Hajj (pilgrimage).
Or said, Equal to the performance of Hajj with me.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1279. Ibn ‘Abbas g reported: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah s and said, Allah’s obligation upon His slaves has become obligatory on my father in his old age. My father is very old and incapable of riding. May I perform Hajj on his behalf?
He s said, Yes.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1280. Laqit bin ‘Amir g reported: I came to the Prophet s and said: My father is a very old man and does not have strength to perform Hajj (pilgrimage) or ‘Umrah or to undertake the journey.
The Prophet s said, Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah on behalf of your father.
[Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].
1281. As-Sai’b bin Yazid g reported: I was seven years old when I was taken to perform Hajj (pilgrimage). This was during the time the Messenger of Allah s performed the Hajjat-ul-Wada’ (Farewell Pilgrimage). [Al-Bukhari].
1282. Ibn ‘Abbas g reported: The Prophet s came across a caravan at Ar-Rauha’ and asked who the people in the caravan were. They replied that they were Muslims. They asked: Who are you?
He s said, I am the Messenger of Allah.
Then a woman lifted up a boy to him and asked: Would this child be credited with having performed the Hajj (pilgrimage)?
Whereupon he s said, Yes, and you will have a reward.
[Muslim].
1283. Anas g reported: The Messenger of Allah s performed the pilgrimage on an unsaddled camel which also carried his provisions (i.e., his Zamilah). [Al-Bukhari].
1284. Ibn ‘Abbas g reported: Ukaz, Mijannah and Dhul-Majaz were markets during the pre-Islamic period. The Companions disliked trading there till the following Ayat of the Noble Qur’an were revealed: There is no sin on you if you seek the Bounty of your Rubb (during pilgrimage by trading)...
(2:198) [Al-Bukhari].

Allah, the Exalted, says:
And fight against the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) collectively as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allah is with those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious).
(9:36)
Jihad (holy fighting in Allah’s Cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.
(2:216)
March forth, whether you are light (being healthy, young and wealthy) or heavy (being ill, old and poor), and strive hard with your wealth and your lives in the Cause of Allah
(9:41)
Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties for (the price) that theirs shall be the Jannah. They fight in Allah’s Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success.
(9:111)
Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home). Unto each, Allah has promised good (Jannah), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward. Degrees of (higher) grades from Him, and forgiveness and mercy. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(4:95, 96)
"O you who believe! Shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful torment? That you believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad s), and that you strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives: that will be better for you, if you but know! (If you do so) He will forgive you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow, and pleasant dwellings in ‘Adn (Eden) Jannah; that is indeed the great success. And also (He will give you) another (blessing) which you love: help from Allah (against your enemies) and a near victory. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad s) to the believers." (61:10-13)
The Qur’anic Ayat relating to the subject under study are many. The Ahadith are also many; these include the following:
1285. Abu Hurairah g reported: The Messenger of Allah s was asked, Which deed is the best?
He s replied, Faith in Allah and His Messenger.
He s was asked, What is next?
He s replied, Jihad (holy fighting) in the Cause of Allah.
Then he was asked: What is after that (in goodness)?
He s replied, Hajj Mabrur (which is accepted by Allah).
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1286. Ibn Mas’ud g reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah s: Which action is dearest to Allah?
He s replied, Performing As-Salat (the prayer) at its earliest fixed time.
I asked, What is next (in goodness)?
He s said, Kindness towards parents.
I asked, What is next (in goodness)?
He s said, To participate in Jihad in the Cause of Allah.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1287. Abu Dharr g reported: The Messenger of Allah s was asked: Which deed is the best?
He s replied, Faith in Allah and Jihad (fighting, struggle) in the Cause of Allah.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1288. Anas g reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, Verily! Setting out in the early morning or in the evening in order to fight in Allah’s way is better than the world and what it contains.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1289. Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri g reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah s and said, Who is the best among men?
He s replied, A believer who strives in the way of Allah with his wealth and life.
The man asked again, Who is next to him (in excellence)?
He s said, Next to him is a man who is engaged in worshipping his Rubb in a mountain valley, leaving the people secure from his mischief.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1290. Sahl bin Sa’d g reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, Observing Ribat (e.g., guarding the Islamic frontier for the sake of Allah) for a single day is far better than the world and all that it contains. A place in Jannah as small as the whip of your horse is far better than the world and all that it contains. An endeavour (fighting) in the Cause of Allah in the evening or in the morning is far better than the world and all that it contains.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1291. Salman g reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah s as saying, Observing Ribat in the way of Allah for a day and a night is far better than observing Saum (fasting) for a whole month and standing in Salat (prayer) in all its nights. If a person dies (while performing this duty), he will go on receiving his reward for his meritorious deeds perpetually, and he will be saved from Al-Fattan.
[Muslim].
1292. Fadalah bin ‘Ubaid g reported: The Messenger of Allah s said, The actions of every dead person come to a halt with his death except the one who is on the frontier in Allah’s way (i.e., observing Ribat). This latter’s deeds will be made to go on increasing for him till the Day of Resurrection, and he will be secure from the trials in the grave.
[Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].
1293. ‘Uthman g reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah s saying: Spending a day on the frontier in Allah’s way is better than one thousand days in any other place.
[At-Tirmidhi].
