Preface
Why is this book called what it’s called?
When I entered the leather community, my name was not Saint. I was given a name at birth that I don’t care to put down in ink. It’s my dead name. The only one allowed to call me that name is my mom.
In 2003, after my failed attempt at joining the military, I started going by Saint, which was part of my last name. This continued for 8 years until 2011. I worked at a company that allowed me to use my nickname, so of course, I was known as Saint. Well, one of the employees, Matilda, told me that she felt the name Saint was offensive to her religion as a Catholic. As a good Christian woman, she went full Karen on the matter. Before long, a company-wide order was issued for all employees to go by their legal first or legal last names in all business dealings. For that enormously petty reason, I went to the courthouse that day and began legal proceedings to change my name. Ninety days later, Saint was my legal name. I’ve been going by that since then.
When I entered the leather community in 2005, it was, and still is, quite vogue to come up with a scene name. I saw the pup community and tried to join in their fun, but I never really fit in. So in my constant design to be different, I took on the moniker of Leather Kitty. This was especially present for all my years that I was with New Mexico FetLifers (NMFL), as my online URL was LeatherKitty. Under the moniker of Leather Kitty, I allowed myself to view the scene with a sense of aloof curiosity, a desire to explore a lifestyle, and an attitude that was both mysterious and alluring. In person, I still frequently went by the name Saint, especially after I legally changed my name. It was also kind of a running joke in later years because, as Saint, I was polite and cordial. But as LeatherKitty, I was aggressive and surly. So people would say, I love Saint, but I don’t like dealing with LeatherKitty.
Later, I decided to drop my scene name and live as open and authentically as possible. It was about 2015 that I stopped going by LeatherKitty and started teaching, writing, and advocating as my legal name only. There is a certain power and intrigue to living behind a pseudonym. You get an entirely different charge from being yourself at all times.
I was also amused with the play on words of Mew-Sings as opposed to Musings. It was too good to pass up.
Who Is E.I. Saint?
Due to the speedy nature of my name change in 2011, I hadn’t really thought things through. I developed a pet peeve about my current name, Saint St James, when people called me the wrong thing or couldn’t grasp it. So, in 2022, I started the ridiculously complex task of choosing a name that was unique, powerful, and, most of all, would allow me to use any part of my name without anger or shame. After much research, soul-search and debate, I finally settled on the three words that would make up the name I could keep for the rest of my life. I intend to legally change my name to this new one in the next five years. I’ve already made the change in several places and begun the transition.
My new first name will be Eldest. I am the first-born child and I’m also an old soul. I’ve lived so much. It’s an aptly descriptive word of who I am. My middle name will be Iconic, which means being regarded as a representative symbol or worthy of veneration. In the leather scene, I can be called Icon when I play as a D-type (Active Participant). I will keep my current first name as my new last name. The name has served me well and is known by the thousands of people who’ve known me over the last
