Chapter 1

After driving for eight hours, everyone in the band agreed it was time to turn in for the night. They pulled into a Holiday Inn motel. At the registration desk, AJ signed in as Mr. and Mrs. Stapleton. Nikki squeezed him tight around the waist when he did this. She loved the idea of it. Pete and Lee also signed in as a married couple. To save money, Eddie, George, and Brad decided to sleep in the same room. This room had double beds, and they paid a little extra to have another portable bed brought in.

After grabbing dinner at a local Burger King, they hung out at the motel's pool for a while. The excitement of the future was still very much on their minds. They started discussing what songs to play at the faculty party. AJ thought they should kind of see what the crowd looked like before committing to a playlist. He suspected the majority of professors would be older, and music from the sixties and seventies might best suit them.

When Nikki left New Jersey, her parents assumed she would room with Lee. After all, they were the girls in the band. AJ and Nikki had not made any plans to live together, but now, once away from their parents' homes, it seemed natural for them to be with each other.

AJ and Nikki headed to their motel room once they finished swimming. AJ watched with great interest as his girlfriend took off her makeup and then changed into her pajamas. He had never seen her do this before. Nikki's pajamas consisted of short pants and a T top. They were light pink in color and made of a shiny satin-like material. She looked cute. Her long, silky, black hair contrasted nicely with the pink-colored T top.

AJ now stripped down to his underpants, and he and Nikki got into bed. This was the first time they would sleep together. The experience was new to them and they liked it. They began kissing. AJ ran his fingers through Nikki's hair. He loved to do this. He then proceeded to massage her entire body, starting at the feet and working his way up.

Nikki became apprehensive when AJ's hands approached her genitals. She had both feared and desired this day for a long time. She realized AJ's reaction to her penis could end the relationship.

Nikki was tense. AJ sensed this and said to her, Relax, Nikki. I know what is there. I have prepared myself for this moment. It's okay. I love you. You are my girlfriend no matter what is underneath.

Nikki heard the words her boyfriend had just spoken but still could not relax. Even though she was comforted by what AJ said, she knew there was a difference between thinking about something and actually experiencing it.

Nikki's genitalia were quite small in size, no doubt due to her small stature and also from the estrogens she was taking. However, she was still capable of achieving an erection. AJ began to gently rub her groin. He then started to kiss her there. Nikki had never experienced anything like this before, and it felt wonderful. She rubbed her boyfriend's head as he kissed her. She was amazed at what was happening. AJ seemed to have no anxiety about any of it and appeared to be enjoying himself.

After a short while, Nikki could no longer contain herself, and she let loose. If AJ was turned off by this, he didn't show it. Saying nothing, he got out of bed, walked to the sink, and wet a facecloth with warm water. He then proceeded to clean up Nikki. The warmth of the facecloth was just as comforting to Nikki as the sex itself. AJ then wiped her dry with a towel. He loved this girl. When he finished drying Nikki, AJ threw the towel and facecloth off to the side and got back into bed. Nikki began kissing him and squeezing him. She loved AJ more than ever.

It was now Nikki's turn to take care of AJ. She rubbed and kissed him all over. When he had achieved firmness, she rolled over and gently inserted AJ into her body. She had given herself an enema and lubricated the area prior to getting into bed just in case something like this might happen. She really wasn't expecting that it would. Nikki had practiced with plastic dilators at home but had never experienced a real person inside of her. It felt so right. She wanted to marry AJ on the spot.

AJ did what men do when they are inside of a beautiful woman. He gently rocked Nikki until he released. It felt wonderful to him and to Nikki as well. She could feel the warm fluid being deposited inside of her. It gave her a feeling of contentment.

For a good twenty minutes, they remained spooned together. AJ had his muscular arms wrapped around Nikki's chest. She had never known love and comfort like this in the past. She felt like a complete woman. There was no dreaming about it any longer. It was happening, and it was real.

Eventually, Nikki and AJ separated from each other and got out of bed. They decided to wash off and take a shower together. It was the first time they would stand naked face-to-face in the light. AJ watched as warm water saturated Nikki's hair. It formed into several black bundles that hung over her back.

AJ grabbed a bar of soap and washed Nikki from head to toe. She had the curves of a woman. AJ washed her genitals, and again, he gave no indication of being bothered by them in any way. When he was done washing her, Nikki rinsed off. She now took the soap and washed her boyfriend from head to toe in the same manner. When they finished showering, each dried off the other. They then went back to bed without putting any clothes on. AJ and Nikki kissed for a while before reassuming the spoon position. In no time at all, Nikki fell asleep encased by AJ's arms. Never ever before had she been so happy. Her man was more wonderful than she could ever have imagined.

The next morning, Nikki woke up first. She ran her fingers through AJ's hair and gently massaged his face until his eyes opened.

She said to him, AJ, honey, we need to get up and get dressed. We have a long way to drive today.

AJ pulled Nikki's head toward him and kissed her. He said, Nikki, last night was the most beautiful and wonderful evening of my life. I hope we never lose this kind of love for each other.

Nikki smiled and said to him, It was just as wonderful for me, and I promise I will do my best to make sure things never change between us. I am already dreaming about when we pull into another motel tonight.

AJ's normal routine was to shower after waking. While he was in the bathroom, Nikki got dressed and put on her makeup. She used a little more than she normally did because she wanted to look extra special for her man. When AJ got out of the shower, Nikki was waiting for him. AJ hugged her and told her how gorgeous she looked. Normally, Nikki did not get too excited when someone told her she was attractive, but when AJ said it, it made her feel really good.

The members of the band met in the lobby of the motel and then walked across the parking lot to a diner. They pulled two tables together, and the waitress took their orders. Nikki tapped Lee on the shoulder and asked if she might accompany her to the bathroom. Lee was naturally attractive and always dressed nicely just as Nikki did.

When they entered the bathroom, Nikki did not head to a toilet. Instead, she grabbed Lee by the shoulders, turned her around so they were face-to-face, and then proceeded to tell Lee about her sexual experience with AJ the night before. Lee was excited for her friend but at the same time wondered how AJ really felt about it. After all, Nikki was not exactly a biological woman. Lee decided to ask her about AJ.

Lee: Did AJ have any hesitations when it came to your body?

Nikki: Lee, for years I agonized over two things with regards to my transition. The first was coming out to my family. It took me a long time to do this, but eventually, it happened. Now, nothing could be better between me and my parents. The second thing I worried about was finding a real boyfriend, a real man. I didn't think anybody would want me. I love gay people, I love lesbian people, and obviously, I love transgendered people as well, but my attraction is to heterosexual men. AJ is the kind of guy for me. You can't be more of a man than he is. I was so nervous about how he would react when we became intimate, but as it turned out, I worried for nothing. AJ completely accepted me for who I am.

Lee: He didn't say anything to you about it?

Nikki: He did. He said he always saw me as a woman no matter what. He knew I was different underneath, but he didn't care. He said I was the woman he was in love with and that was that. He said he couldn't imagine being with anybody else.

Lee: How was the sex?

Nikki: It was great and wonderful for both of us. I really mean that. When we woke up this morning, AJ had no mixed emotions or regrets over what we did last night. I think he now loves me even more. I told him I would never leave him or mistreat him. He said he already knew that.

Lee: Wow, this is amazing. I am so happy for you.

Nikki: How about you? Did anything happen between you and Pete?

Lee: No, but it could have. Things were heating up and heading in that direction. I don't know, though, something inside stopped me from continuing. It just didn't seem right. I mean, last night was the first time I was ever really away from my parents. I felt like I was disrespecting them by sharing a room with Pete, much less having sex with him. I guess I was thinking too much.

Nikki: Did Pete understand?

Lee: You know, Pete was great about it. He said he was proud of me for worrying about my parents. He rubbed my back and my neck, and we cuddled. He put no pressure on me to do anything I wasn't ready to do. Pete was a real gentleman about it, and I really appreciate him for it.

Nikki: Pete is a really great guy. I have always known that. Things will happen when it is the right time for both of you. As far as AJ and I are concerned, last night was the right time. It couldn't have been any more beautiful than it was. Everything was so perfect.

Nikki and Lee both looked into the mirror to make sure their hair and makeup were still good. They then returned to the table.

The band drove long hours for three more days until they reached Austin. Lee and Nikki did not mind the journey at all. In fact, they loved it. There was no longer a need for either of them to keep their relationships hidden. Freedom had arrived.

When the band rolled into Austin, they had no trouble finding the apartments they had rented. Their new living quarters were actually nicer than what the online pictures had depicted. A community pool and a gym were only steps away, and across the street was a huge park with walking trails. It was an ideal place to live.

AJ and Nikki moved their belongings into one unit, while Pete and Lee moved their items into another. Even before she left New Jersey, Lee had reservations about moving in with Pete so quickly. However, after she realized what a true gentleman he was, she no longer had any concerns at all. In fact, she was excited about it. Eddie, George, and Brad moved into a third unit. Theirs was the largest apartment with three bedrooms. Everything seemed to be working out.

The next day, the band members headed out to the University of Texas. They drove around the campus for a while in Pete's van just to see what was there. The campus was huge. After this, they made their way over to the office of the dean. The dean, Ms. Autumn Davis, was not in, but she had left instructions for the band on things they needed to do. Dean Davis's secretary had the band follow her to a large auditorium about a mile away from the office. It was here the band was going to play their first concert. A stage had already been set up. She gave AJ a key to a back door of the building so the band could come and go as they pleased. The secretary then left.

Wasting no time at all, the band drove back to their apartment complex. Pete reattached the trailer to the van. This trailer, of course, held all the band's instruments and equipment. The band then returned to the auditorium. The boys unloaded everything and then set up the stage as they wanted. Pete and AJ found drink and snack machines in the foyer and purchased as many items as they could with the money they had in their pockets. The band's first meal in Austin consisted of soda, chips, and honey buns. It didn't matter. They were together as a band and about to play their first gig away from home. They were ecstatic.

Once the stage was ready, the band began to rehearse. They really didn't need to, but they wanted to. They loved to play together. As they practiced, individuals and small groups of people began to assemble in front of the stage. Some of these people were university employees who were getting the auditorium ready for the faculty party, and some were students who just happened to be passing by. It was clear this impromptu audience was enjoying what they heard. They applauded loudly after each song.

After playing for only a short while, a well-dressed woman in a business suit approached the stage. She was of middle age and in perfect physical condition. Her hair and makeup made her look very important and distinguished. In fact, she was important and distinguished. The woman was Ms. Autumn Davis, the dean. She introduced herself to the band and said she could already tell she had made a wise decision in bringing aboard the Misfits in exchange for enrollment and tuition.

Ms. Davis said she knew from watching the videos Father Whelan had sent that the band was very good. However, she now told the band they were even more impressive in person. She seemed pleased. Ms. Davis shook every band member's hand and said she hated to leave but needed to attend a meeting. The band continued to rehearse after she had made her way out of the auditorium.

About half an hour later, a voice called out to the band from the shadows on the far side of the auditorium. It was a familiar voice, but nobody in the band could immediately identify it. AJ looked at Nikki and shrugged his shoulders. The voice grew louder as the person it belonged to walked closer to the stage. Finally, the man came out of the shadows, and his face could be seen. It was Jenny's father, Mr. Mason. The band members let out a collective cheer. They ran down from the stage and hugged him.

Nikki: Mr. Mason, what on earth are you doing here?

Mr. Mason: I came to see my favorite band and bring them a present.

Nikki: A present?

Mr. Mason: Yes, a very special present.

Mr. Mason stepped to the side and motioned for someone to step forward. It was Kirby Johnston. Kirby waved. His disfigured face had a great big smile on it. The band members ran to Kirby and hugged and kissed him like there was no tomorrow. They missed him. They missed the times he and Jenny took control of the soundboards for them.

Nikki: Kirby, shouldn't you be back in New Jersey getting ready for school?

Kirby: I should be, but I'm not. Mr. Edwards said I could finish my classes away from the Henderson School. He called it an internship and said if you would have me, he would officially give me the credits I needed to graduate. I also have to do some homeschooling and send him the test results. Mr. and Mrs. Mason are going to take care of me out here, and my parents agreed to it. They were actually excited for me. Of course, everything depends on you guys taking me back into the band. Oh, yeah, Mr. Mason is part of the deal too. We are kind of a team.

Nikki: I don't have to ask the band for a vote. I already know what everybody is going to say. It is a big fat yes from all of us.

Kirby thanked everyone. As he did, Mr. Mason quietly pulled AJ aside.

Mr. Mason: AJ, I know we showed up here uninvited, and I sincerely apologize for this.

AJ: Mr. Mason, you are family to us. There is no apology necessary. Of course we don't mind, but what is going on?

Mr. Mason: Well, after Jenny died, Kirby began to decompensate. He had grown so close to her. Kirby wouldn't eat, he wouldn't go to school, and he was crying all the time. Even Father Whelan couldn't console him.

AJ: I wasn't aware of this.

Mr. Mason: Well, leave it to Father Whelan to come up with an idea. He presented it to Mr. Edwards, who was totally on board. Nobody, not even Kirby's doctors, know how much time he has left. His facial problems are starting to block off major arteries. I don't understand all of the technical issues, but it appears to be serious and inoperable. Father Whelan and Mr. Edwards did not want Kirby to be miserable in whatever time he has, so they came up with this plan.

AJ: Mr. Mason, just today, as we were setting up for practice, we all began to freak out. It really hadn't occurred to us that Jenny wasn't going to be here with us. She was so good at what she did. We depended on her. I know she taught Kirby a lot about how to do things, so it would be great to have him on board. Having him join us is really not kindness or charity on our part. We needed someone who knows our sound to take control of the behind-the-scenes electrical stuff. But how did you get involved with bringing Kirby here?

Mr. Mason: Again, it was Father Whelan. He knew Mrs. Mason and I were suffering badly over losing Jenny. But we not only lost Jenny, we lost everything she lived for as well. Jenny lived for this band, and she
