About this ebook
'She loved me as I loved her, fierce as a bloodied blade'
When Lia, an idealistic queen, falls for Xania, her new spymaster--who took the job to avenge her murdered father--they realise all isn't fair in love and treason.
Lia won't mourn her uncle: he's left her a bankrupt kingdom considered easy pickings by its neighbours. She's sworn to be a better ruler, but if she wants to push through her reforms, she needs to beat the Court at its own games. For years, Xania's been determined to uncover her father's murderer. She finally gets a chance when Lia gives her a choice: become her new spymaster, or take a one way trip to the executioner's axe. It's an easy decision.
When they fall for each other, their love complicates Lia's responsibilities and Xania's plans for vengeance. As they're drawn together amid royal suitors and new diplomats, they uncover treason that could not only end Lia's reign, but ruin their weakened country. They must decide not only what to sacrifice for duty, but also for each other.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A queen who finally gets her hands on the throne after her uncle has made a mess of things, a spymaster looking for revenge and might just have some sort of attraction, very complicated by their roles, shows promise. There were parts where I wanted more and where I felt somewhat lost in the story and couldn't see the motivations or background for why characters did what they did. I want to know what happens next because what happened will have consequences for the characters.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This had all the things I like - court politics and conspiracies, secret passages, an idealistic but practical queen, an unlikely (and therefore overlooked/underestimated) spymaster, a society where same-sex relationships are completely normal but the queen still needs an heir - but... just didn't do them in the way I like. This is largely because it's in young-adult mode, which I can't really fault it for. It is what it is; YA, especially YA romance, has certain concerns which aren't my concerns, and the focus on those concerns naturally means less room for the more in-depth delving into the conspiracies, motivations, and mechanics that I'd have liked. (The conspiracy itself isn't simplistic - but the telling of it skims over much so at times I lost track and not in a convoluted machiavellian way, just in a "Wait, who's Hazell again?" way.)Still a perfectly enjoyable read though, and probably even more enjoyable to those of the appropriate age group and/or genre fans.
