About the Author: Jackie Bolen
I taught English in South Korea for 10 years to every level and type of student. I've taught every age from kindergarten kids to adults. Most of my time has centered around teaching at two universities: five years at a science and engineering school in Cheonan, and four years at a major university in Busan where I taught upper-level classes for students majoring in English. In my spare time, you can usually find me outside surfing, biking, hiking, or snowshoeing. I now live in Vancouver, Canada.
In case you were wondering what my academic qualifications are, I hold a Master of Arts in Psychology. During my time in Korea, I completed both the Cambridge CELTA and DELTA certification programs. With the combination of almost ten years teaching ESL/EFL learners of all ages and levels, and the more formal teaching qualifications I've obtained, I have a solid foundation on which to offer advice to English learners.
I hope that you find this book useful. I would love it if you sent me an email with any questions or feedback that you might have.

English Prepositional Phrases for ESL/EFL
––––––––
Introduction to the Book
Welcome to this book designed to help you expand your knowledge of prepositional phrases in English. My goal is to help you speak and understand English more easily, as well as to get a better score on English proficiency exams like TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS.
Let's face it, English can be difficult to master, even for the best students. In this book, you'll find dozens of dialogues with prepositional phrases in American English.
To get the most bang for your buck, be sure to do the following:
Review frequently.
Try to use some of the phrases and expressions in real life.
Don't be nervous about making mistakes. That's how you'll get better at English.
Consider studying with a friend so you can help each other stay motivated.
Use a notebook and write down new words and prepositional phrases that you run across. Review frequently so that they stay fresh in your mind.
I recommend doing one or two pages a day over a couple of months. This will be more beneficial than finishing the entire book in a week or two.
Good luck, and I wish you well on your journey to becoming more proficient with English prepositional phrases.
What is a Prepositional Phrase?
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that contain a preposition (in, on at, by, under, etc.) and an object. You can also see some other words related to the object.
There are two main types: adverbial phrases and adjectival phrases. However, this book doesn't differentiate between the two. It isn't necessary for most purposes to do this.
Here are some example sentences with a prepositional phrase:
I cheered for the Oilers with excitement.
I completed the marathon in spite of my injury.
A new stadium is under construction.
I had to change schools at the age of 12.
In theory, it sounds like fun but are you sure about it?
Sorry, that part is out of stock.
By the way, how's your new job going?
At a Loss
Ted is trying to buy a used laptop from a shopkeeper.
Shopkeeper: Can I help you with something? We have lots of new arrivals for sale.
Ted: I'm interested in this laptop, but why is it so expensive? It's used, right?
Shopkeeper: Well, used laptops are in high demand. The ones you see will all be sold within a week. They're of the highest quality and we've checked them for viruses and wiped them clean.
Ted: I'm willing to pay at most $800 for it.
Shopkeeper: I can't sell you something at a loss! It just doesn't make sense.
Ted: Under no circumstances will I pay more than $800, and that's the computer I want.
Shopkeeper: I can't do it. By all means, feel free to take your business elsewhere.
for sale: Available to buy.
in high demand: Lots of people want it.
at most: The maximum.
at a loss: To lose money on a deal.
under no circumstances: Never, no matter what happens.

Todd: Sure thing. Thanks, Dad!
Dad: No problem.

Cindy: Wow! At least he still has his house and car. I wonder if he's in arrears though? He has to be.
