Chapter One:
The Sheriff of Cedar Creek County Montana name is Randolph Bishop, who has the nickname of Red, due to his red hair. All his friends in the County and in the town of Cedar Creek also called him just Red not Sheriff.
Red is twenty-eight years old, unmarried, has a girlfriend who owns the Golden Bear Saloon that she took over running when her Father died. Red was born on the 640-acre Cattle Ranch the Bar-C, which his parents still own, and is located five miles outside the town of Cedar Creek.
The Sheriff was sitting in his office in the town of Cedar Creek Montana, smoking one of those long thin Mexican Cigars when the door flew open, and Jack Franklin, his lifelong friend, rushed in with a concerned look on his face and said,
Red there has been a shooting at the Three Aces Saloon you got to come quick!
Red slowly raised his six-foot, two hundred pound frame from the old swivel chair he was sitting in, hitched up his gun belt, put his grey Stenson hat over his red hair, and walked out the office door with Jack toward the saloon. As they walked down the wooden boardwalk, their boots were making a knocking sound when Jack said,
Red, the Bartender at the Three Aces is holding Bart Barns the shooter, until you arrive in hear all the facts. I think it was self-defense, but you have to hear the witnesses’ stories.
Jack and the Red walked into the saloon and all was quiet. The Bartender was holding a double barrel shotgun across the bar pointed at Bart, who was sitting in a chair at one of the tables. Sitting across from him was a dark haired man in a black suit, white shirt, with a black string bow tie. The white shirt had a bullet hole where the man’s heart is located with red blood oozing out. As Red walked up to the table, he said,
Well Barns what’s your story?
Sheriff, I was just sitting here playing poker with the Gentleman sitting across from me, when I accused him of dealing from the bottom of the deck. Well, he then went for his shoulder holster gun and that’s when I shot him!
You have any witness to backup that story?
Yea Sheriff, there were three others at the table who will back up my story.
Okay, hand over your gun and come along with me down to the jail. Just give me a list of the names of the men who were at the table, and if the witness back up your story you will be released and in the clear.
Okay Sheriff,
and Bart handed over his forty-forty from his holster butt first to Red, and they both left the saloon for the Cedar Creek Jail.
After putting Bart behind the bars of one the two jail cells, Red walked back through the door, which led to his office from the cell area, hug up the cell keys on the wall, sat down in his swivel chair and relit the Mexican Cigar.
Chapter Two:
Red was again sitting at his desk waiting for one of his Deputies to return with the witness statements for the bar shooting, when he heard from one of the two cells in his office,
Hey Sheriff, when do I get out of here?
Just be calm Bart, one of my Deputies’ will be back with the witness statements, and if all you told me rings true, you well be out in a few hours.
The Sheriff went back to continue waiting for his deputy to return, and still smoking his Mexican Cigar.
Hey Bart, I am going down to the Gold Bear Saloon and see how Donna is getting along today and have a beer. If the Deputy shows up, let him know where I have gone.
Donna is Red’s longtime girlfriend. They both grew up in Cedar Creek, and naturally fell in love with each other overtime and wanted to be married. However, do to Red’s job as Sheriff, Donna felt the job was too dangerous to Marry and raise a family. She would only marry Red when he quit being Sheriff!
Red rose from his swivel chair, put his gun belt around his waist with his forty-four in the holster, and walked out the office door heading for the Golden Bear. As he walked up the wooden boardwalk, he noticed it was a great day in Cedar Creek, blue skies with white puffy clouds here and there, with bright sunshine.
When he arrived at the Golden Bear, he walked through the Bat-Wing doors into a half-empty saloon, since it was noontime. He notice right away Donna was sitting at the end of the bar drinking
