Letters from... - Dash Starkey
Hello?
The Fairy Relations Office or F.R.O. as we call them, said you requested a fairy friend? I’m not sure if I am what you were hoping for, but here I am. Maybe if I tell you about myself, you might decide to like me, and be my friend? Oh, this is so hard. Talking about myself doesn't come naturally, though I do love a chat. I don’t know what to say.
Tippy May said to tell you I go to academy, or school or whatever humans call it. She said you may want to know about my family too. Let's see, I have a little sister called Blue Bell, who like most little sisters, can be annoying. Sometimes she can be fun, she can be a good friend, she can tell on me to Mum. If you think about it, she can be a lot of things, good or bad. I suppose that’s what little sisters are?
Oh, I better tell you who Tippy May is. She’s my bestest friend. We do lots of things together, especially laugh. Do you have a bestest friend? I bet you laugh lots with them too? A good friend always makes you feel better. When I’m sad Tippy May makes me smile. I like that about her. What do you like about your friend?
Tippy May and I like doing things together, whether it's going to the creek, playing games or just having a snack. Plus we go to academy together and have the same classes. Actually, we nearly have all the same classes, except for a few classes.
I want to be a Fairy Unicorn Nurturer (F.U.N.) when I grow up as I love unicorns. This means I take F.U.N. classes. Tippy May, on the other hand, likes sea creatures, so she is studying to be a Dolphin Animal Guide: Level 1 (D.A.G.1). Our different dreams means we need to take different classes, to achieve them. Though that doesn’t stop us from being bestest friends. It just gives us more to talk about.
I have other friends who will pop up in my letters at times. It's probably best not to mention them all now, as I'll get off course and this letter won't end. The F.R.O. said I should talk about how I live and the stuff I do day to day. Thinking about it, letters sound a bit like a diary. Though, a diary is only read by the one who writes it. A letter is better as you are sharing with a friend. You are a friend, aren’t you? I do hope so.
Words don’t always come easy to me, yet I will try. I must admit, my friends write better than I do. They do math better too. I will try my best to write to you lots, because I want to learn about you, and human stuff too. I'm looking forward to trading stories. That would be nice, don't you think?
Tomorrow, I have to go up to the paddocks as some baby unicorns need looking after. It’s a very exciting time when the unicorns have their babies. It's part of my classes to look after them, yet I am so excited. I’m sure the work to care for them won't feel like a chore.
Anyway, I have to set the table for dinner. I’ll talk, or write you tomorrow?
Be my friend
Butter Bell
Hello new friend
Hmmm, I’m still wondering what I should write about, even though I thought about it all night. Writing to someone is new to me. Do you talk or write to any other wee folk from fairyland? Or any other humans? Do you think writing is easy or hard?
The F.R.O. find the nicest humans for us to write to. So, you must be very nice. I’m excited to do this and you are my first human friend! We are friends aren’t we? I just wanted to tell everyone at academy that I have a human friend. It's just that exciting!
What did I do these last few moons? Hmmm, let me see. I ran into Dippy Doo the other day. Literally. I ran into her. I was watching a leaf flutter by and as I was looking up, chasing it, I accidentally ran into Dippy Doo and knocked her over. Offering my hand to help her up, I said ‘sorry’, as I should have been looking where I was going. She said it was okay as she sometimes does the same thing. We had a good laugh about it. Do you ever watch fluttering leaves and wonder where they are going?
Maybe I can tell you about Dippy Doo? She is a garden pixie who loves squishy mud and talking non-stop. Everyone says she’s very chatty. So chatty, I had to wait till she breathed in between sentences, to tell her about you. I hope you don’t mind? Dippy Doo wasn't sure she would remember to write often enough. As our time is different to yours, much slower, I understood what she was saying. A short time for us may be days for you. Though I promise I will try very hard to send you regular letters.
As I said in my first letter, it is unicorn season, and I am very excited. Did you know baby unicorns are called foals, just like baby horses? Well they are, and when they are born they do look like baby horses. You see, unicorn foals don’t have a horn when they are born. Horns only grow as the
