Introduction
My name is Ruth Jackson, I was born in Thomas Town Mississippi in 1941. I had two sisters and three brothers; it was six of us. My older brother was AD Arthur Dan Latiker, we called him Buddy, my older sister was Lula Pearl. When she was seven years old, she and my other sister Mary Lee was playing on the front porch of our house, Pearl fell and broke her arm. The doctors at the hospital wrapped her arm to tight and she lost it. She is now 83 years old and still alive; she could have done something about her arm. My next sister was Mary Lee, she was my favorite, she was like a mother to me. I came to live with her and her husband when I was a teenager. She helped me all her life and I miss her so much, I loved her so much. My next brother was MC, he was so talented, he could sing, dance, play instruments, and talk like Donald Duck. He loved to ride wild horses.
I was named after my mother Ruth
, she was a twin, her sister’s name was Ruby. They both were beautiful Black women. My last brother was James, he was a real nice man, who loved to eat. He and his wife Alberta had five children. He died at the age of 48 because he ate himself to death. It hurts so bad when you lose someone you really love. We are the Latikers, if your last name is Latiker, then you are family. Some are white and some are Black, some are Indians. My daddy’s sisters look like Indians with long silky hair, some of his brothers and sisters had green, gray, or blue eyes.
I remember some things that happened that stay with me until this day. Some people say, how can you remember at such an early age?
, I believe that when you have been traumatized, you can’t forget. My day was a tall light skinned good looking man with green eyes. He had other women in other towns where he worked. Back then my dad didn’t want to be home all the time, so he took odd jobs away from the family, mostly cutting logs. He had a friend named Henry Lee, he was a beautiful man I was told. He was part Indian and part Black with long curly hair. He had gotten into some trouble earlier with our white
relatives and my dad saved him. My dad made a deal with this man to come stay in our house to take care of us while he went to work. My mom was a young, beautiful woman at the time. Henry Lee was in our home day and night with my mom. My older brother AD would see them together all the time. He fell in love with my mom so hard that
