INTRODUCTION
One of the best aspects of the TV show Friends is that the characters have incredible long-lasting bonds with one another. The show is really about friendship above all, and friendship for life. Every episode offers the potential for insatiable laughter, sweeping romance, tears of joy and sadness, fierce fights, joyous makeups, and, of course, lasting memories.
Throughout the show, Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, Monica, and Phoebe find themselves in relatable situations that usually end in practical life lessons. Most of us will never, ever, ever wear leather pants on a first date, as Ross did… or put ground beef in an English trifle, like Rachel. But we will always get off the plane to be with the ones we love, like Ross, right? And we can adopt some of those life lessons to crocheting, too. Crochet a Turkey Mug Cozy
to remind yourself that laughter is the best medicine when you or a friend is feeling down. Or, stitch up a set of PIVOT Washcloths
to remember that friendship means helping those you love through any messy situation. My friends and I enjoy playing a game in which we imagine which Friends character we identify with or is the most like us. Are you a Monica because you like to organize everything on the coffee table? Well, you just might be if you keep all your crochet hooks organized. Are you more of a Joey because you’d rather do anything than share your pizza with other people at the table? This holds true especially if you are a yarn hoarder who keeps all the soft wool for yourself! (I might be a bit guilty of this last one.)
The point is, we all have a Friends character we relate to, and everyone in the show exhibits various characteristics that the audience relates with, however differently we each perceive them. For instance, we all have a little bit of Phoebe’s quirkiness or Rachel’s charm. The way we see ourselves in these characters changes as they change throughout the series. Experiencing relationships, loss, successes, and growth challenges each one of us to become better humans. As the friends grow in the show, we grow along with them.
The same can be said for your growth as a crocheter. In this book, you’ll find beginner patterns for those just starting out on their crochet journey, as well as patterns for those who have been working with a crochet hook for many years. Each pattern is labeled with a skill level so you can find the perfect one for you. Some of the patterns have a chart to help guide you along, but each chart is also available online at www.insighteditions.com/FriendsTheOneWithTheCrochet
. Take a peek inside each category to find adorable projects straight out of some of the most iconic Friends episodes, and rediscover the magic behind each one. Find inspiration in patterns like the Central Perk Blanket
, or the Canoe Sweater
, which you can revisit as you grow and learn. And discover new favorites in patterns like the PIVOT Washcloths
and Rachel’s Crochet Blanket
, which will begin to seem like old friends as you make them again and again.
Are you ready to create amazing crafts with your favorite friends by your side? Well, throw your favorite Friends seasons on the TV while you begin crocheting and you’re sure to see some familiar patterns pop up. Happy crocheting, friends!
CHAPTER 1
THE ONE WITH THE ADORABLE AMIGURUMI
RACHEL GREEN DOLL
DESIGNED BY LEE SARTORI
SKILL LEVEL:
Rachel may have been a clueless and spoiled individual when she first appeared in Monica’s apartment, decked out in her wedding dress after leaving her fiancé at the altar. However, over the years, Rachel has evolved into a loving and caring friend.
Rachel is always determined to get what she wants. And after realizing that marrying for money will not give her the life she envisioned for herself, she puts one foot in front of the other to grow and learn as an independent adult. Starting off as a waitress at the Central Perk café, Rachel works her way up to being an assistant at Fortunata Fashions, reaches even further to become a personal shopper at Bloomingdale’s, and ultimately rises to executive at some top fashion houses. Her effortless style (especially her iconic hairstyles) leaves everyone around her in awe.
Not only does Rachel have an enviable fashion sense, but she has the wit and playful nature to match. Whether she’s aiming one of her quick retorts in the direction of a roommate or just being playful, like when she sings Baby Got Back
to her daughter for a laugh, Rachel is ready with a huge smile!
A little coffee cup, a fun little apron, and of course the iconic hair! Everything you need to crochet your own Rachel Green doll is here, complete with tiny shoes and adorable knee-high white socks.
EVERYONE IS GETTING MARRIED OR PREGNANT OR PROMOTED AND I’M GETTING COFFEE! AND IT’S NOT EVEN FOR ME!
—Rachel Green, The One with George Stephanopoulos

ROSS GELLER DOLL
DESIGNED BY LEE SARTORI
SKILL LEVEL:
Ross Geller is known for his awkward sense of humor and his love of all things science! He is the big brother to Monica and on-again, off-again boyfriend to Rachel, whom he has known since high school. Throughout the show, Ross experiences relationship gaffes and challenges involving divorces, marriages, and rocky breakups, but through it all, he proves himself to be one lovable guy.
While Ross is book-smart—as well as often extremely polite and caring—he can be clumsy, oversensitive, and, at times, very socially awkward. Ultimately, Ross is always on the lookout for the well-being of his friends and family.
This dinosaur- and outer space–loving Ross Geller Doll is so cute and beginner-friendly! Work in continuous rounds with a larger hook for the head portion of the doll, and switch to a smaller hook for the details, including Ross’s stylish red jacket. He looks so real that we almost feel the need to put gel in his hair!
UNAGI IS A TOTAL STATE OF AWARENESS.
