Nobody Plans for This: Jackie’s Story
A million thoughts ran through her mind as she let the word sink in: Divorce.
How could he throw away fourteen years for a fling?
That morning had started like every other. Jackie got the kids ready for school while Derrick got ready for work. They never chatted before he left. Some days she didn’t even hear him walk out the door.
But this morning, Derrick had lingered over his coffee and offered to take their three children to school. When she heard him come back, Jackie knew something was wrong. The coffee he poured remained untouched as he listed the reasons he needed to leave. She begged him to go to counseling, but he wasn’t interested.
She’s been there for me for the last three years. It’s time for me to be there for her.
Was that supposed to be a good reason for abandoning his family?
He went on and on about everything Jackie had done wrong. You know you drove me to it, Jackie.
I should have seen it coming. Were all those out-of-town trips actually work-related?
He made sure she knew that his paycheck was his. The retirement account was his. He earned all of it. He paid for the house. He paid for the cars. He wasn’t going to go broke paying for her to sit at home all day.
Does he really think I don’t earn my keep running this household and raising these kids while he works late most nights? Does he even consider that giving up my career was hard, but I thought we were in this together for the good of our family?
Derrick always acted and talked like they were a team and the family finances were really for the family. But now his words seem so cold. He sounds so selfish.
Of course he’s selfish. He’s been having an affair for three years. Three years. Or so he says. I wonder how long it has really been going on.
Derrick picked up the suitcase and headed for the door.
When did he pack that?
For the rest of the day, Jackie tried to wrap her brain around everything Derrick had said. It just didn’t feel real.
Jackie knew she needed to pull herself together before she picked up her kids from school, but her husband’s assurance that she wouldn’t see a penny of his retirement savings account made her question her decision to leave her marketing career to be a stay-at-home mom. After ten years, with so many technological advances, she wondered if she’d be able to keep up. Tears welled in her eyes as she thought about starting at the bottom again at thirty-seven.
How will I make ends meet? What if the courts believe it was my fault? Will I make enough to cover the mortgage, or will we have to move? I am going to struggle for the rest of my life, and I’ll probably never be able to retire, thanks to his bad choices. This isn’t what we planned. This isn’t fair to the kids.
She couldn’t stop the flurry of emotions—worry, anger, shock, shame. She didn’t even know how much money they had or where the money was. Derrick took care of all the finances.
Is that because he spends all our extra money on the other woman? Why didn’t I pay more attention?
Jackie couldn’t remember the last time she actually looked at a bank statement. And credit cards? She had two she regularly used, and Derrick told her which types of things went on each. No, the groceries go on that one. Gas goes on this one. It all felt so controlling now that she started thinking about it.
He talked about having investments and always said they were fine
financially.
What did that mean? How much do we have? Where are these investments? Would I even know if he had hidden some stocks away in a secret account? Of course, I wouldn’t. I haven’t been watching the money because I had no reason to suspect anything was wrong.
Jackie had put so much trust in her husband, but how well did she know him? Would he give her a fair share of their assets?
Wait. Give? Don’t we both
