    The School and Local Area

    Lesson 1

    Where do we live?

    Learning Objectives and Outcomes

    Children will be able to talk about a familiar place.

    They will identify different kinds of houses and say which are similar to their own.

    They will learn that all pupils have a personal address and begin to become aware of the significance of each line.

    National Curriculum Programs of Study

    Geographical enquiry and skills 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d

    Knowledge and understanding of places 3a, 3b,

    Breadth of study 6a, 7a

    Introduction

    Before the lesson ask children to bring in photographs of their own houses.

    Discuss with children what homes are for. Ask them to say what their own homes are like and why they are special to them.

    Main Lesson

    Look at a selection of pictures showing different kinds of houses – bungalows, town houses, etc. Label the different kinds of homes and ask if any children live in homes similar to these. Children could put themselves into groups and discuss what kinds of homes most people live in etc.

    Tell children where you, the teacher lives and write the complete address on the whiteboard. Discuss with children the significance of each line of the address. Ask children to say where they live (the register might be a handy aid here!)

    Help the children to write out their own addresses on small separate sheets of paper Any early finishers could draw a picture of their own house.

    Bring the children back together and place their addresses on appropriate places on the local map.
