Plaza del Triunfo
The Plaza del Triunfo, or Square of Triumph, found in the old town of Seville is where the Plaza de los Reyes and the streets of Ceferino González, Joaquín Romero Murube, Santo Tomás and Miguel de Manara all converge.
Plaza del Triunfo
The square has two monuments and is bordered by Seville Cathedral, the Real Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias. All of these are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are also the buildings of the Casa de la Provincia and the Convento de la Encarnación.
Templete del Triunfo de Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio
The Plaza takes its name from the Temple of Triumph of Our Lady of Patronage monument with the image of the Virgin and Child inside. It was built in 1756 to commemorate the survival of Seville after an earthquake the previous year and stands in front of the Archivo de Indias.
Monumento a la Inmaculada Concepción
The monument to the Immaculate Conception, constructed by Lorenzo Coullaut Valera in 1918, stands in the centre of the square on its tall white columns. It has an image of the Virgen of Immaculate Conception on the top. The statues of Juan de Pineda, Bartolome Esteban Murillo , Miguel Cid and Martínez Montañés stand at its base. These famous citizens of Seville were advocates of immaculism.
Archivo de Indias
The Archive of the Indies is housed in what was once the Casa Lonja de Mercaderes, the Merchants’ Exchange of Seville. It was built in 1572 as the Archbishop was unhappy with the way the merchants used the stairs and interior of the cathedral for their stalls.
The Renaissance building was designed by Juan de Herrera. Today it is a repository that covers around three centuries of history with documents related to the Spanish colonies that include the Americas as well as the Philippines. The Archive of the Indies was created in 1785 by Carlos III. It is possible to visit both its permanent and temporary exhibits.
Casa de la Provincia
The House of the Province of Seville dates back to the fourteenth century and was originally the headquarters of the Delegation of Seville, known as Casa Palacio. It formed part of the Hospital of our Lady of Pilar, the Hospital del Rey and the Hospital Real. It was originally a hostelry for pilgrims but then a refuge for the needy.
The two storey building stands around an elegant rectangular patio with galleries on the ground floor supported on arches held up by Tuscan white marble while the upper floor has high balconies looking out onto the courtyard.
Real Alcázar de Sevilla
The Alcázar is regarded as one of the most beautiful palaces in Spain and has a history covering more than one thousand years. It was originally developed by Moorish Muslim kings as a palace on the site of a tenth century fort and was named
