Introduction
For centuries Portugal’s second city has been synonymous with port, but thanks to its recent renaissance, Porto offers far more than the famous ruby tipple. Once an industrial, workmanlike city, it now claims a revitalised cultural scene and is fascinating in its own right.
Hugging the steep banks where the River Douro spills into the Atlantic, much of the city’s appeal lies in its location. Ever since the Romans established a trading route here Porto has prospered from commerce. It was here that Prince Henry the Navigator (1394–1460) learned his love of ships and initiated Portugal’s role as one of the primary players in the Age of Discovery. Porto, where some of the caravels were constructed, prospered from the new sources of wealth. Later the port wine trade with Britain was to compensate for the loss of the lucrative spice trade. Today the city is still the hub of the port wine industry, and continued English involvement can be seen in the conspicuous names of the shippers and brands above the port wine lodges.
Porto from the air
Porto Convention & Visitors Bureau
Historic Porto
With dramatic bridges, Baroque churches and a red-roofed jumble of buildings creeping up the hillside, Porto contains a wonderful cocktail of architecture. It poses majestically on steep slopes, with myriad miradouros (look-out points) affording superb views across the river to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the famous cellars nurture the precious port wine. Soaring above the city in the centre is the Baroque Torre de Clérigos, the 75-metre (246ft) -high bell tower of the eponymous church, while towards the river the Sé (Cathedral) crowns the Penaventosa hill. Dotted around are the towers of Baroque churches, whose sober facades belie a wealth of lavish gilded woodwork inside. These Baroque monuments were happily left unscathed by the great earthquake of 1755 which ripped through the city of Lisbon.
The real tourist magnet of the city is the Ribeira quarter, a World Heritage Site where multi-coloured houses tumble down to the River Douro and a string of restaurants spill out on to the boat-lined quayside. Behind the waterfront lies a labyrinth of steep cobbled alleys and stairways, where washing billows from flower-filled balconies. Renovation and gentrification is underway but this historic quarter still has an authentic medieval feel. Linking Ribeira with Vila Nova de Gaia across the River Douro is the great swoop of the Ponte Dom Luís I, the most central and iconic of the city’s six bridges.
