Say cheers to Portugal

We were itching to get back to Europe in our ‘van. With restrictions lifted, we weighed up our options and Portugal had a ring to it. Neither of us had been there and we had heard such good things from friends who had visited about the people, beaches, cities and food.

Filled with enthusiasm, we settled down to an evening of planning and that’s when we realised that it wasn’t like going to Yorkshire or the West Country. We were going to need a bit longer than an evening!

To start with, we only had a vague knowledge of the geography of the country and no idea of where we wanted to go. A natural starting point seemed to be MMM and I found some excellent articles (July 2020 and March 2021 – find even more on our Exact Editions archive search service  reader.exacteditions.com/magazines/23799), which got the juices flowing. A request for tips on the Out&AboutLive motorhome forum  forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk also came up trumps and a Google search turned up a few top 10 places to visit-type articles.

I discovered that we had an old Dorling Kindersley gathering dust on our bookshelf. We bought the slightly racier Lonely Planet’s and I invested in the Caravan and. The trip planning and country introduction sections were incredibly useful, but we found that we barely used the site listings.
