Overview
During World War II, Nazi Germany attempted one of the most ambitious assassination plots in history. In The Nazi Conspiracy (2023), Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch give us the inside story of the failed plot to kill Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin at a summit in Tehran in 1943. It is a thrilling account of how the operation was foiled by a combination of intelligence coups, military strategy, and luck, and a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of those who fought against the Nazis.
Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The base was unprepared, and the results were catastrophic. The entire base was an inferno. Two battleships sank completely, and several other battleships, destroyers, and cruisers were obliterated. According to early reports, more than 2,000 Americans were dead, and another 1,000 were seriously wounded.
Aside from the horrors of the attack itself, the global consequences were momentous. Japan was allied with Nazi Germany and Italy, nations that were fighting the British in a war that had swept Europe. Japan had just altered the global balance of power.
