After all, the sticky stuff—from health-conscious sugarless gum to ballooning bubble gum to minty fresh sticks—is every-where. We’ve all watched people blowing bubbles in movies, bought packs at the store, and even stumbled upon chewed-up wads on the sidewalk. How different would our lives look without gum?
As it turns out, though, gum isn’t modern. It’s ancient.
The lives of Neolithic people six thousand years ago, living in what is present-day Denmark, looked very different from life today. Instead of going to school or scrolling on smartphones, Neolithic people spent all their time searching for food.
Since farming was difficult in the harsh northern climates, they gathered local vegetables and fruits and hunted ocean animals—much harder than grabbing a slice of pizza today! They also made their own homes and clothes out of animal bones and skin, built enormous tombs for their dead, defended themselves with flint axes, and . . . chewed gum?
That’s right—some 5,700 years ago, someone living in this area chomped on an ancient version of gum and spat it out on the ground, where it remained for thousands of years until it was rediscovered by archaeologists.
But while that wad of old spit-covered gum remained unchanged for centuries, the culture of gum—and gum’s influence on our lives—did not. Get ready to sink your
