About this ebook

The fate of the entire colony - and of their world - depends on Kira's actions.

The Dome habitat with its thriving human colony was the only world Kira knew. Now she was helping terraform it, enriching its atmosphere with oxygen.

Soon, Terran plants would replace the cyanobacterial algae of this primitive world and people would craft it into a paradise worthy of its name.

If only their oxygen-generating water splitters weren't breaking down.

And it's up to Kira to find out what's wrong.

And despite her joy of swimming in the ocean, she is well out of her depth this time.

The fate of the entire colony - and of their adopted world - now depends on her action.

    A note to my readers

You are holding a sci-fi story in your hands.

This is not a gay romance, or any other kind of romance. It's written under my Olivette Devaux pen name as a result of my Grand Pen Name Consolidation. I had fun writing the story, making the book cover, designing the font… and now I have fun sharing it with you!

This story has earned a Silver Honorable Mention by the Writers of the Future Contest, which still puts a smile on my face.

    Enjoy!

No project could have this amount of rotten luck. Not after sixty years packed with intense effort to make Eden IV worthy of its name. The progress prior up to Kira’s birth had been significant enough to allow some of the colonists to undertake short forays outside the biodome without an oxygen mask. To date, this was an exercise less than half of them were able to endure.

The low oxygen was, she had read, akin to the mountain sickness of old Earth, and much like the adaptations of life-spacers born at fluctuating O2 concentrations. They learned to thrive regardless, except their oxygen generators had to supply only a ship.

She had to supply a whole new planet.

She learned so much from all that accumulated knowledge of adaptation, the buildup of hematocrit, the reality that some of their clan members would always have to carry an oxygen concentrator even within the biodome and a full breathing mask outside of it.

A biodome with twenty percent oxygen, courtesy of hydroponically grown plants that made the air heavy and thick, like a warm, moist blanket redolent of incipient decay.

Kira functioned well outside the biodome, being the select few who had adapted to Eden’s fifteen-percent oxygen atmosphere with relative ease. She didn’t bring her breather for
