Joshua 10 New International Version (NVI-EN)

The Day the Sun Stood Still

10 It happened that Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and destroyed it completely, doing with Ai and his king what he had done with Jericho and his king, and that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel. and was living among them. 2 He and his people were very afraid, for Gibeon was as important as a city ruled by a king; he was bigger than Ai, and all his men were good warriors. 3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem, made the following appeal to Hoam, king of Hebron, to

    8

Piram, king of Jarmuth, to Jaffia, king of Lachish, and to Debir, king of Eglon: 4 Come here and help me to attack Gibeon, for she made peace with Joshua and the Israelites .

5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon met and came with all their armies. They surrounded Gibeon and attacked her.

6 The Gibeonites sent this message to Joshua at Gilgal's camp:

Do not abandon your servants. Come quickly! Save us! Help us, as all the Amorite kings who live in the mountains have joined together against us!

7 Joshua left Gilgal with all his army, including his best warriors. 8 And the LORD said to Joshua, Do not be afraid of these kings; I gave them into your hands. None of them will be able to resist you .

9 After a full night's march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who inflicted great defeat on them in Gibeon. The Israelites chased them on the climb to Beth-Horom and killed them all the way, as far as Azeca and Makkedah. 11 As they fled Israel on the way down from Beth-Horom to Azeca, the Lord threw great hailstones over them from heaven, which killed more people than the Israelites' swords.

    9

12 On the day that the LORD delivered the Amorites to the Israelites, Joshua exclaimed to the LORD, in the presence of Israel:

Sun, stop over Gibeon! And you, O moon, over the valley of Aijalom!

13 The sun stopped, and the moon stopped, until the nation took revenge on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jasar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and for almost an entire day it did not set.

14 Never before or since has there been a day like that, when the Lord answered a man. No doubt the Lord was fighting for Israel!

15 So Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

The Five Kings Amorreus Are Killed

16 The five kings fled and hid in the cave of Makkedah. 17

They told Joshua that they had been found in a cave in Makkedah. 18

He said: Roll large stones up to the entrance to the cave, and leave some men on guard there. 19 But don't stop! Pursue enemies. Attack them from the rear and do not let them reach your cities, for the LORD your God has delivered you into his hands .

    10

20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, almost exterminating them. But some managed to escape and took refuge in their fortified cities. 21 The entire army then returned safely to Joshua, to the camp of Makkedah, and after that, no one else dared to open their mouth to provoke the Israelites.

22 Then Joshua said, Open the entrance to the cave and bring those five kings to me. 23 The five kings were taken out of the cave.

They were the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they took them to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him:

Come here and put your foot on the neck of these kings. And they obeyed.

25 Joshua said to them, Do not be afraid! Don't be discouraged! Be strong and courageous! This is what the Lord will do with all the enemies that you have to fight . 26 Then Joshua killed the kings and had them hanged on five trees, where they stayed until evening.

27 At sunset, under Joshua's orders, they were taken
