Nancy's Roots in Baltimore
On March 26, 1940, in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland, Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi was born into a family deeply entrenched in the world of politics. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and served as both a U.S. Congressman and Mayor of Baltimore. Her mother, Annunciata D'Alesandro, was an influential political organizer and helped pave the way for Nancy's own political aspirations.
The D'Alesandro household was always bustling with activity, as political discussions and strategizing were a staple at the family dinner table. This environment nurtured Nancy's interest in politics from a young age. Nancy, the youngest of six children, was known for her intelligence, determination, and strong work ethic, traits that would prove instrumental in her rise to prominence.
Nancy attended the all-girls Institute of Notre Dame, a prestigious Catholic high school in Baltimore. It was during her time at Notre Dame that she began to develop her leadership skills and sense of social justice. As a student, she excelled academically and was actively involved in extracurricular activities, including the student government.
Upon graduation, Nancy left her beloved Baltimore to attend Trinity College, a Catholic women's liberal arts college in Washington, D.C. This move not only provided her with an excellent education but also gave her the opportunity to witness the workings of the federal government firsthand.
Nancy's early years in Baltimore provided the foundation for her political career. The experiences and lessons learned in her family home, high school, and college years instilled in her the importance of public service and a deep commitment to her community.
