    Chapter 1

Aaliyah stood at the kitchen counter side by side with her mother peeling vegetables in amicable silence. The women got along well, and Aaliyah had always felt very close to her mom. She suddenly raised her head, looked over to her and asked, Mom, once we get to America, will you continue to wear the Abaya and Hijab? She saw her stop and think, it was rare for Darya Mian to speak before carefully considering her words, this is one of the many reasons Aaliyah always trusted her advice.

Aaliyah, my child, I have been wearing them since I was a young girl, and I don’t feel an urge to change that simply because we are moving to a new country. I have been taught to protect my modesty, and your father is the only man who sees me, but even here in Beirut the young girls don’t all adhere to our laws anymore, the world is changing. Aaliyah’s stomach turned, she was one of the girls her mother spoke of; she wore the Hijab, the headscarf, but had never made the decision to wear an Abaya, rebelling because she saw it as old-fashioned and controlling. Her mom gave her a sideways glance, the look falling on her fitted jeans, and then continued to speak, With the way things are at the moment, you need to try and fit in when we arrive there my child, and I know Abba is going to fight it, if only to protect you, but I’m on your side.

Aaliyah put down the work she was doing and gave her mother a tight hug, You are the wisest woman I know, and I don’t know what I would do without you to talk to mommy. A tear rolled down her cheek, and then the emotional moment was over as the door to their apartment opened and her father entered, bellowing a greeting from the foyer, Good evening my ladies!

Abdul Kalam Mian was many things. He was difficult, cantankerous, bad tempered and stubborn, but where his family was concerned, he was a bear. He adored his wife; and his daughter had him wrapped around her little finger, of course he was unaware of this. He lavished everything he could on them, and they might not live in luxury, but their apartment was in a safe block off Rue Maarad in a cosmopolitan part of Beirut. He showed his claws if anybody tried to hurt his girls though, and thus far he had succeeded in scaring off any suitors who may have taken his Aaliyah from him. He would keep her under his roof, and protect her for as long as he could.

He placed his briefcase on the floor and hung his hat on the hook next to the door. As he finished doing this and turned around, Darya gently inclined her head in greeting and kissed his cheek, and Aaliyah gave him a hug, then stood back and playfully tugged at his beard, How was your day Abba? Abba was a term of endearment, the Arabic word for father, and she had always called him this. It was not such a good one princess, I’m afraid the banking industry is not doing so well. I am very relieved we are leaving here next week, but I was told today the pay-out I was meant to receive as my pension fund is not possible, we have only the money I have saved to start our lives in America, and the only thing saving us is the fact our plane tickets are already paid for. He moved heavily to an armchair, feeling twenty years older than his fifty one years. Aaliyah sat down at his feet and held his hands, It will be okay Abba, we will manage, there will be better opportunities for work over there, and I will work too, you’ll see, I will help.

You are naïve child, things don’t happen overnight, and if I can avoid it, you will not work! It is not proper. Now go and help your mother. He dismissed her and rested his head back. They left in a week, and even though he had found work as a mathematics Professor at a University in New York, they had no friends, knew no-one, and he had no clue where they would live. He had booked accommodation at a hotel for a week, and quietly prayed they would find something in those few days, financially they could not afford longer.

They sat down to dinner half an hour later, and Abdul quietly discussed a few details of packing with Darya while Aaliyah picked restlessly at her food. He stopped speaking to his wife and observed his daughter closely for a moment, What’s troubling you princess? When she looked up at him, there was conflict and confusion in her eyes, and when she spoke he understood. Abba, I have been worrying about how you would feel if I didn’t wear the Hijab in America, I don’t want to upset you, but we are moving to a different country with a different culture. Shouldn’t we embrace the local ways? The girls there have so much freedom…

He kept his voice calm, knowing she would only rebel in the face of anger. I understand Aaliyah, and I also know you remember why women preserve their modesty by wearing that, if not the Abaya. He did not do it intentionally, but the glance he cast her attire was disapproving, I want you to respect me enough to wear it while we are travelling, and when we arrive there you and I can have this discussion again. I am after all a practical man. She nodded in agreement to his condition, and stood to go to her room.

The next few days flew by in a blur, and before they could blink, the Mian family took a last look at their beloved, war-torn Lebanon, and boarded a plane to start a new life in the United States of America.

‘THUMP, THUMP, WHUMP, THUMP.’ The sound of gloved fists contacting the heavy punching bag reverberated through his gym, and sweat poured off his lean body as Maxwell let go of all the days’ frustration. He pictured the face of every would-be investor who had attempted to steal from him. Lots of those, being the ruler of an empire like his didn’t come without enemies attempting to storm the castle. He stopped and craned his neck to look around the gym; what a castle it was.

He gave up on the punching bag, he’d been at it for what felt like hours, and no amount of beating an inanimate object was making him feel better. He stripped the gloves off as he walked, dropping them on the floor, doing the same with his sweaty shorts, and his shoes. The cleaning girl would deal with it tomorrow. Privilege had its perks.

As he dived into the cool water of the lap pool, he thought of how nice it would be to have someone to share this with. He had searched, and been burnt very badly in a recent failed relationship. He was too much of a public
