Our story so far (as told in Cassie Clears the Bases and Pitchers and Catchers Report):

Cassie Snow, batting coach for the Mudskipper League’s Wasconaway Wildcats, faces a particular challenge with Charlie Maple, who was a high school baseball phenomenon before his parents’ deaths derailed his ambitions. Now he’s trying to return to baseball, but his nerves are getting in the way of his talent. With the help of Zane Dillinger, a veteran major leaguer looking to retire to the quieter pace of the Mudskipper League, Cassie uses a highly charged threeway in the clubhouse weight room to help Charlie find the confidence and focus he needs to get his groove back.

But Cassie doesn’t get a chance to rest, because trouble suddenly erupts between pitcher Frank Mumford and catcher Gabe Scalzido. Zane and Cassie manage to get to the bottom of the conflict, and Cassie uses her unorthodox methods to help the teammates work together on a common goal - scratching Cassie’s itches while she waits for a promised post-game night of passion with Zane.

Game day finally dawned, and Cassie was a nervous wreck. Despite the continued progress in batting, the tight teamwork between Frank and Gabe, and general competence in the field, she was still afraid that there was some overlooked problem that stood between the Wasconaway Wildcats and victory over the Zenith Zephyrs. For the last two nights, every since her training session with Frank and Gabe in the clubhouse showers, Cassie had been plagued with nightmares that started out as sexy encounters with Zane and ended up with her standing naked on the pitcher’s mound under harsh spotlights in front of packed stands at the Chester E. Middleton Veterans’ Park Field.

She was sure she would be sleeping just fine if she were doing it in Zane’s arms, or at least after a romp in bed with Zane, but he was insistent that the nights leading up to the game be spent solitarily. He was even resistant to sexting.
